This senior quality engineering role combines test automation with systems operations, requirements work, coding and design, and includes mentoring team members.
The work supports eCommerce websites and the systems behind them, with a focus on reliability, growth and cost-effective IT resources.
Responsibilities
Build and run automation tools that remove repetitive tasks from workflows and releases.
Handle routine infrastructure upkeep such as backups, patch management and hotfixes, and escalate any problem found on backup media.
Check desktops against IT policy and run regular database integrity checks to keep data loss to a minimum.
Troubleshoot systems engineering issues as software operational support: research reports, build fixes or escalate them, spot trends, find root causes, work with cross-functional teams and keep stakeholders informed.
Run daily operations for existing systems: maintain complex setups, monitor health and performance, review logs to catch issues early, and document findings.
Build operational features and management processes that let eCommerce websites handle growth and traffic, and design systems testing processes and environments.
Keep engineering processes and designs documented, and coach and train team members.
Understand business, stakeholder and technical requirements, help assess existing solutions, maintain the requirement traceability matrix, and help write user stories for components, modules and simpler requirements.
Follow coding guidelines, write or configure small components under guidance, keep development records, track the latest languages and frameworks, find CI/CD and testing tasks to automate, add telemetry when asked, and apply security policy to your code.
Suggest cost-effective IT right-sizing for current and future needs, analyse resource use, right-size applications to meet service levels, and help build capacity plans.
Define the processes, tools and baseline products for low-complexity projects, and set up new cloud virtual machines for email, intranet, VLANs, firewalls, VPNs and core business applications.
Prioritise issues with moderate supervision on moderate-complexity projects, propose feasible fixes on your own, and weigh every available option.
Maintain branches for ongoing development and releases, tag every code version, and record the differences between versions.
Help create simple, modular, extensible and functional designs that meet requirements, and weigh trade-offs across system components against business needs.
