Description

Permanent position on the US Data Engineering team, part of the company's data engineering practice.

You report to the Director of Data Engineering.

The company was set up in 2006 to serve underserved and specialty commercial clients through regional brokers and direct channels. It is now the fastest-growing unit in its group.

About 400 staff work for the US business, mostly across six major cities.

Products span technology, cyber and data risk, several professional liability lines, media, entertainment, management liability, crime, kidnap and ransom, commercial property and terrorism cover.

The data platform runs on Databricks, with dbt for transformation, and analysts use PowerBI on top of it. Much of the business logic sits in dbt. The team uses pytest for unit tests and Azure Pipelines for CI/CD, and wants to extend pytest to end-to-end BDD testing.

The team is adding AI to its work with tools such as Claude Code, testing widely to find ways engineers can deliver more value faster.

The technology landscape is still taking shape, and engineers are expected to help build out the stack to fill gaps and seize new opportunities. Nobody is expected to know the whole stack. The team looks for people who understand data structures and algorithms and can learn new tools.

Diverse talents are welcome. Tell the team how your own abilities would help.

Responsibilities

  • Bring your quality engineering expertise to the US Data Engineering group, with automation at the core of how the team protects its work.
  • Engage stakeholders early to learn what they need from the data applications, and speak for them during development.
  • With the product owners, turn those needs into requirements that are clear and testable.
  • Write automated tests that confirm the code meets the requirements and that future changes do not bring regressions.
  • Build, extend and refine automation frameworks so testing stays effective and efficient.
  • Work with data engineers in your squad on code quality, and with quality engineers across the practice so test coverage is consistent and complete.
  • Review code from data and quality engineers, looking for ways to improve.
  • Apply close attention to detail where it counts, and use a risk-based approach so quality outcomes arrive quickly.
  • Help build a culture where everyone owns the quality of what they produce, in an environment where people can speak up without fear.

Requirements

  • Confidence and drive to shift left and understand what quality means for the business.
  • Deep familiarity with behaviour-driven development, including Cucumber and Gherkin syntax for test scenarios.
  • Experience with modern test automation, working as an SDET who writes code to ensure quality.
  • Excellent knowledge of Python testing frameworks, particularly pytest.
  • Good knowledge of SQL.
  • Ideally: dbt.
  • Hands-on experience with cloud data lakehouse technologies such as Databricks (preferred) or Snowflake.
  • Experience working in agile Scrum ceremonies with technical and non-technical colleagues, including roadmap planning, feature workshops, backlog elaboration and code review.
  • Desirable: experience with additional technologies, data science knowledge or an insurance background.

Conditions

Salary depends on factors including the scope, complexity and location of the role, the candidate's skills, education, training, credentials and experience, and other terms of employment.

Hybrid role requiring two days in the office each week.

Based in Atlanta, Boston, Chicago, New York or West Hartford.

Benefits

  • Competitive salary and bonus tied to personal and company performance.
  • 401(k) with competitive company matching.
  • Health, vision, dental and FSA plans, including medical, limited purpose and dependent care options.
  • Company-paid group term life, short-term disability and long-term disability cover.
  • Paid parental leave.
  • A 4 week paid sabbatical after every 5 years of service.
  • Financial support for adoption and reimbursement for medical travel.
  • Up to $600 a year reimbursed for health club membership or fitness program fees.
  • Recognised with a 2024 Cigna Well-Being Award for a best-in-class health and wellness program.
  • Modern, open offices and complimentary drinks.
