The company makes search and AI tools that help people find answers in real time across all their data, at scale.
This is a senior software engineering role on the APM UI team. You will build parts of Kibana, including the service map and trace waterfall, which help application developers and engineers understand their observability data and troubleshoot their apps.
You will work alongside a group of engineers and designers, contributing your own expertise while learning from them.
Responsibilities
Build intuitive UI components in TypeScript, React and Node.js, and connect them to back-end services for a smooth experience.
Run usability tests and collect user feedback to keep improving the interface.
Take complex, loosely defined problems from start to finish: shape the approach, split the work if needed, make the key technical calls and ship.
Lead architecture and system design discussions, weighing trade-offs, backwards compatibility, performance and scale.
Set coding standards and make sure the team follows them. Build reusable components, add automated testing and deployment, assess new technologies and document best practices for the team.
Review code thoroughly for standards, readability and security issues. Give clear feedback and discuss findings with the author.
Work asynchronously with a fully distributed team across time zones, in the open on GitHub and Slack.
Work closely with designers and product managers to turn mockups into working components, keep the visual design consistent, and join brainstorms for new interface ideas.
Requirements
Solid production experience with full-stack JavaScript, preferably TypeScript, with React on the front end and Node.js on the back end.
A record of leading non-trivial projects end to end with real design ownership and little guidance.
Strong architecture and system design judgment, including in large existing codebases.
Experience designing and launching several UI components that clearly increased user engagement.
Experience with AI-assisted development tools, which help you build features faster, fix complex systems and improve existing code.
Excellent written and verbal communication, and a real interest in async work and sharing knowledge.
A mindset of raising the level of the engineers around you.
A generalist approach with a focus on the people who use the software.
Bonus: experience with Reactflow.
Bonus: experience with the company stack, OpenTelemetry, observability tools, or log and data ingestion pipelines.
Bonus: experience with Go, Kubernetes or cloud-native application development.
Bonus: experience building large data-heavy interfaces with search, filtering and tables, or working with streaming or real-time data.
Bonus: prior open-source or public, working-in-the-open experience.
Bonus: experience mentoring engineers or leading a small project team.
