Description

Teamwork is central to this role in the risk consulting group. You will pool resources with colleagues to solve practical problems that affect clients' futures.

Field Risk Engineers work with clients to find and reduce risks such as fire, flood, windstorm and equipment breakdown. You act as a risk management resource while working for a global commercial and personal insurer, one of the largest property casualty networks in the world.

Each survey can differ widely, from a metal working plant one day to a university campus the next. Success depends less on knowing every occupancy and more on building trust and working across teams through clear communication.

When you need specialist occupancy knowledge, a technical integration group and a large, experienced team offer training, mentoring and collaboration.

Responsibilities

  • Travel, about 25% of the time overnight, to run property loss prevention surveys at commercial facilities.
  • Determine building construction and assess how plastics affect it.
  • Review water supplies and sprinkler demand to judge whether they are adequate.
  • Identify occupancy hazards and check whether protection features are adequate.
  • Assess external exposures that affect a facility.
  • Estimate fire and natural catastrophe losses for a facility.
  • Carry out consultative visits at customer sites.
  • Conduct plan reviews.
  • Witness fire protection equipment testing.
  • Record survey findings in a data-driven reporting application.
  • Mentor and train less experienced colleagues.
  • After each survey, develop loss prevention solutions for hazards found, using internal and external guidelines plus current tools and methods.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in science, technology, engineering or mathematics.
  • Minimum of 8 years of highly protected risk, specialized industry and/or boiler and machinery field experience.
  • Broad knowledge of many occupancy types.
  • Proven ability to carry out detailed windstorm evaluations.
  • Strong oral and written communication.
  • Expected to travel and attend meetings at offices, field sites and construction sites.
  • Work closely with account teams, including account engineers and underwriters, and give them technical support.
  • Make decisions with or without established guidelines.
  • Work with high motivation and little close supervision, and finish assignments on time.
  • Inspect buildings and other structures both visually and with instruments.
  • Read construction drawings, diagrams and printed materials.
  • At least 1 year of driving experience with a valid U.S. driver's license.
  • Desired but not required: Professional Engineer or Certified Fire Protection Specialist designation.
  • Stay on your feet and walk 8-10 hours a day, and work safely at heights.
  • Understand safety training for workplace and construction hazards.
  • Use ladders, scaffolds, lifts and other access equipment safely.
  • Lift and carry materials and equipment up to 50 lbs.
  • Work outdoors.
  • Wear required safety equipment: hard hat, safety shoes, safety glasses and hearing protection.
  • Work safely in a variety of occupationally hazardous locations.
  • Type at a computer for several hours a day.
  • Drive and operate a motor vehicle safely.

Conditions

Primarily based in the office, as in-person collaboration is valued.

Functional area: underwriting.

Equal opportunity is provided to all qualified individuals regardless of protected characteristics.

Benefits

  • Freedom to manage your own schedule, and ability to work from home.
  • Continued education and tuition reimbursement.
  • 401(k).
  • Maternity and paternity leave.
  • Volunteer time off.
  • Total Rewards Program covering health, wellbeing, financial security and professional development.
  • A strong sense of community.
