Description

The energy transition is pushing electricity demand and transmission capacity up fast, so transmission systems are set to grow considerably. HVDC plays a central role here: it connects remote and offshore renewables, links markets, and strengthens AC grids. Control and protection solutions within these systems keep operation safe, efficient, and reliable.

The Grid Systems Integration business of the company is hiring a Senior Engineer for Control System Performance to join the HVDC NPI team. This is a senior specialist role. You will act as a trusted consultant, tighten design and review practice, lead advanced technology work, and help build high-performance HVDC control and protection solutions. You will also shape technical governance, innovation, quality, and where HVDC system capability goes over the long term.

Responsibilities

  • Advise senior leaders and consulting engineers on HVDC control system performance
  • Lead development work within NPI programmes for VSC HVDC control and protection
  • Help build and maintain the HVDC Control & Protection Algorithms technology roadmap, and spot areas for future progress
  • Drive standardisation work inside and outside the company, including representing it at IEC, CIGRE, and similar bodies
  • Chair and take part in technical and product development gate reviews, and help make design reviews run well
  • Help project teams solve technical problems during tendering, delivery, and rollout of new solutions
  • Serve as the technical authority on major quality issues and root cause analysis
  • Support skills development, technical training, and knowledge sharing inside the company and with outside institutions
  • Take part in patent evaluation, look for technology synergies across the business, and mentor engineers

Requirements

  • A Master's degree or PhD in electrical and electronic engineering or a closely related field focused on control systems, ideally with a power systems emphasis
  • Experience leading technical teams to deliver quality output on business deadlines
  • Experience writing high-quality requirements, design, and test specification documents
  • Strong experience developing control and protection algorithms in MATLAB/Simulink
  • Experience running EMT studies for power systems
  • A working understanding of VSC and LCC HVDC technology
  • Deep knowledge of control algorithm principles, functional definition, implementation, control software architecture, interaction studies, grid forming control, and verification and validation of control system performance
  • Willingness to travel for business as required
  • Preferred: experience with multi-terminal HVDC systems
  • Preferred: experience with PSCAD simulation software
  • Preferred: recognised expertise in HVDC control and protection algorithms
  • You do not need to meet every requirement. If your skills and experience match several key parts of the role, please apply.

Conditions

Relocation assistance is not provided.

The company is an equal opportunity and affirmative action employer.

Benefits

  • You will work on advanced HVDC technology that matters for the future of energy transmission. You will help shape next-generation control system performance, influence technology direction, and contribute to reliable, resilient grid solutions for the energy transition.
  • The company offers a development path with varied experiences and mentoring from your people leader and trusted mentors, along with a focus on work-life balance, fair pay, performance-based rewards, wellbeing programmes for you and your family, and chances to move across teams and functions.
