The company is hiring a Senior Director of Site Reliability Engineering to build and lead an SRE organization across its observability and control plane product lines.
This is a program-building role. You will set SRE strategy and operating standards, build teams from scratch or grow existing groups, and lead people and organizational change. You will report to the VP of Engineering and work with product, platform, and infrastructure leaders across several business units.
You will design reliability programs that cover both internal platforms and commercial products, and set up SRE culture, practices, and tooling from the beginning.
Responsibilities
Build the SRE program from the ground up: write the charter, operating model, hiring plan, and multi-year roadmap.
Set SRE principles, practices, and standards for observability products (including OODP, metrics, and alerting) and control plane offerings.
Create reliability frameworks that work for both internal and customer-facing systems.
Design on-call rotations, incident response processes, and a blameless postmortem culture.
Build and grow an SRE team from the existing base across observability and control plane areas.
Design hiring criteria and interview processes to attract strong SREs with platform and reliability experience.
Create mentorship and career development paths, and foster SRE culture and continuous learning.
Lead the shift of product and infrastructure teams toward reliability-first thinking.
Set clear SRE career levels, expectations, and growth frameworks.
Define SLOs, SLIs, and error budgets for observability and control plane products, and put them into practice.
Lead AI-native toil reduction work that automates repetitive operational tasks across SRE and product teams.
Own incident management: design escalation policies, postmortem practices, and ongoing improvement loops.
Work with platform and infrastructure teams to improve reliability tooling such as CI/CD, deployment systems, and monitoring.
Set up reliability metrics, dashboards, and reports so leadership can see status.
Work with product teams to bring SRE thinking into the design and build of new features.
Work with observability leadership on the internal versus commercial product strategy, and adjust SRE programs to fit each.
Work with customer success and support on customer-facing reliability, and define how SLAs and SLOs are communicated.
Work with infrastructure and platform teams on shared services, runbooks, and operational tooling.
Work with security and compliance on reliability governance and risk.
Requirements
12+ years of experience in SRE, platform engineering, or reliability engineering at scale.
5+ years in leadership roles (director or principal engineer) managing SRE or reliability teams of 10+ engineers.
A proven record of building SRE programs from scratch or scaling immature ones, with measurable business results.
Strong evidence of leading people and organizational change, moving a culture from reactive to proactive reliability.
Deep SRE expertise: SLOs, error budgets, blameless postmortems, on-call design, and toil reduction.
Hands-on experience with observability platforms covering metrics, logging, tracing, and alerting.
Experience running both internal platforms and commercial SaaS products.
Comfort working across many teams and products, setting standards and driving their adoption.
Nice to have: experience with control plane architectures or platform-as-a-service systems.
Nice to have: experience building SRE programs in hybrid or multi-cloud environments.
Nice to have: a track record of mentoring and developing SRE or platform leaders.
Nice to have: familiarity with chaos engineering, reliability testing, or resilience frameworks.
Nice to have: open-source contributions or thought leadership in the SRE community.
You can define a charter, win stakeholder support, and carry a multi-year strategy from concept to maturity, and you are comfortable working in greenfield settings.
You can shift how an organization thinks, so reliability is owned by everyone and not only by SRE.
You coach and mentor well, and you build environments where people grow.
You communicate clearly, explaining reliability ideas to engineers, product managers, and executives.
You can code, debug, and design solutions alongside your team.
You understand observability, monitoring, and telemetry infrastructure in depth.
You know multiple deployment models, cloud platforms, and the operational problems that come with them.
You make data-driven decisions and rely on SLOs, metrics, and evidence.
You influence cross-functional partners without direct authority.
You act quickly and iterate, and you are willing to decide with incomplete information.
