Description

You will join the Software Engineering Excellence unit (TDD), which builds software and digital products for the company's energy transition work. Teams cover software engineering, platform engineering, data services and technical excellence, and work with business and technology specialists across the company.

The STM (Short-Term Modelling) team builds software that plans and optimises the company's Nordic hydropower output over the next 1-10 days. The work sits between energy markets, long-term market analysis, hydrology forecasts and real-time operations. The solutions run 24/7 in Norway and Sweden and help production planners and dispatchers use the water in the reservoirs well.

The team delivers an operative planning application plus Python and C++ libraries for watercourse modelling, optimisation algorithms and running the SHOP optimisation engine. Other teams and the team's own services depend on these libraries, so clean APIs, clear module boundaries, semantic versioning and disciplined release management matter.

The environment is traditional Linux. Development happens on Fedora, software ships as native RPM packages, and services are deployed as Helm charts through Flux to Kubernetes clusters both on-premises and in the cloud. Comfort in the terminal, an understanding of how Linux systems fit together and working over SSH are part of daily work.

Responsibilities

  • Build and improve the planning application and the underlying Python and C++ libraries.
  • Keep library interfaces clean, with clear module boundaries, semantic versioning and sound release management.
  • Carry out large refactorings in small steps behind tests, remove code that is no longer needed, and move reporting and collectors out of STM without disrupting operations.
  • Write examples and documentation so other teams can use the software without needing help from the team.

Requirements

  • Strong Python programming skills.
  • Experience designing libraries and APIs, including clear module boundaries, versioned interfaces and deprecation paths, so others can depend on the code safely.
  • Working knowledge of Linux packaging (RPM and dnf), GitLab CI and containers, so modules are easy to build, release and consume.
  • You use AI coding agents effectively, for example for large mechanical refactorings, and still care about the quality and testability of the code you merge.
  • You are comfortable with cleanup work and step-by-step refactoring.
  • You think about the developers who will use STM and provide the examples and docs they need.
  • Good social and communication skills.
  • Fluent English. Norwegian is preferred.
  • A proactive team player who takes ownership, enjoys stretching yourself and has a strong drive for excellence.
  • Other useful skills: C++ with CMake is a strong plus, TypeScript is a plus, and Kubernetes or Helm is a plus but not a requirement.

Conditions

Background checks are carried out on qualified applicants before hire.

The role requires eligibility for security clearance and authorisation.

  • Social activity groups such as football, yoga, sailing, climbing, boxing and cabin rentals.
  • Competitive employment terms and benefit schemes in a workplace that puts safety first.
  • Work for a company certified as a Great Place to Work, on energy transition work that contributes to the climate fight.
  • The company has 125 years of experience in clean energy and aims for a world run entirely on renewable energy.
