Description

The company's software sits at the heart of the energy transition. This role is for the Engineering Manager of the team behind one of its flagship grid software products, based in Oslo.

You will lead a team of about 10 to 11 backend and platform engineers. Your main job is to set the team up to perform well, grow careers, and deliver with quality and predictability.

The role combines engineering, product, and delivery. You will work closely with the Product Architect, the Product Owner, and senior technical leads, and your scope may widen into broader product work over time.

The team works with a high degree of autonomy and technical engagement.

Responsibilities

  • Line manage about 10 to 11 engineers across backend and platform work. Hold regular one-to-ones, agree clear growth goals, support promotions and skill building, and build a psychologically safe, high-performing culture in line with company values.
  • Lead hiring interviews for the team, design onboarding for new joiners, run performance reviews according to HR guidance, and address performance issues directly and constructively.
  • Keep the team delivering on a two-sprint monthly release cycle. Coordinate work across teams based on feature scope or technical reach, and spot and clear dependencies and organisational blockers early.
  • Track team capacity, plan around leave and absence, raise resourcing risks early, and update plans as AI (Artificial Intelligence)-assisted development tools change how productive the team is.
  • Act as the link between engineering and product. Align on roadmap and prioritise the backlog with the Product Owner and Product Manager, represent the team to service delivery, other site engineering managers, and product leadership, and lead product direction discussions alone when product ownership is stretched.
  • Promote the use of AI-assisted development tools in the team, and work with senior technical leads and the Product Architect on architecture decisions affecting the product portfolio.

Requirements

  • Required: You measure your success by the growth of the people you lead rather than by the code you write, and you have enough technical depth to hold credible discussions with senior engineers.
  • Required: Relevant software engineering experience, ideally in distributed systems, integration platforms, or enterprise SaaS (Software as a Service). A relevant engineering or technical degree is useful but not required; your overall experience and achievements matter more to us.
  • Required: People management or team lead experience, formal or informal, with clear ownership of team results.
  • Required: A solid engineering foundation that lets you engage with senior engineers on technical choices without slowing them down.
  • Required: Delivery management experience with Agile/Scrum, sprint planning, release management, and backlog management.
  • Required: Clear communication with engineering, product, and business stakeholders.
  • Required: Comfort working across functions with Product Owners, Architects, QA (Quality Assurance), SRE (Site Reliability Engineering), and external Product Managers.
  • Preferred: Experience with integration platforms, messaging systems, or data flow products.
  • Preferred: Product management or product ownership skills, including turning business needs into engineering priorities on your own.
  • Preferred: Familiarity with cloud-native, Kubernetes-based architectures and modern SRE practices.
  • Preferred: Experience in a multi-site, globally distributed engineering organisation.
  • Preferred: Background in energy, utilities, or grid technology.
  • Preferred: Exposure to AI-assisted development tools and how they affect team capacity planning.

Conditions

Based in Oslo.

The team ships on a two-sprint monthly release cycle.

Benefits

  • Ongoing on-the-job learning and development.
