Description

You will join a weapons project team in the Central London defence analytics group. The team sits in a joint unit with civil servants, serving personnel and other contractors.

The job is to build dynamic computer models of weapon systems for a UK Ministry of Defence customer. The models are used in internal and external simulations to judge how well those systems perform and what they can do.

Most models are built in MATLAB/Simulink, run in-house to answer customer questions, then exported for use in the customer's own modelling tools.

The role suits recent STEM graduates, postgraduates, or people with industry experience building engineering models who want to use those skills in aerospace modelling and simulation.

You will work closely with teams across the UK and partner nations and can help shape joint working practice and shared knowledge, including by challenging existing methods.

Weapon system complexity and capability keep changing worldwide, so the work stays current.

The team's assessments feed into MOD equipment procurement and reach UK defence partners and front-line forces through models and the products made from them.

You will gain a detailed understanding of how weapon systems work and how to capture that in a computer model.

The company is a global aerospace, defence and security group headquartered in Italy, with over 53,000 staff, 8,500 of them across 9 UK sites.

Responsibilities

  • Build computer models of weapon systems, test them in-house, and support their integration into customer simulation environments.

  • Give advice and support to MOD customers, sometimes at short notice.
  • Apply your growing experience to propose and carry out better tools and processes.

  • Pursue joint approaches with UK and multinational partners and identify good practice.
  • Travel in the UK and abroad for technical exchanges with partners.
  • Take ownership of tasks, processes and improvement initiatives.

Requirements

  • Understand scientific methods and apply fundamental physical principles.
  • Hold a STEM degree and have strong numerical and analytical skills, applied to real problems through modelling and simulation.
  • Have experience in some of the following languages: MATLAB/Simulink, C/C++, C, Python.
  • Work well with others and collaborate within an interdisciplinary team.
  • Solve problems and manage your own work to deadlines, sometimes at short notice.
  • Communicate clearly in writing and speaking with audiences from varied technical backgrounds and seniority levels.
  • Hold, or be able to obtain, UK national security clearances suited to sensitive assessment work.
  • Nice to have: knowledge of aerospace areas such as aerodynamics, propulsion, sensors, guidance and control.
  • Nice to have: experience with defence modelling and simulation environments, customers and requirements.

Conditions

This is a permanent, full-time role, though part-time work of 4 days a week will be considered.

The work setup is listed as onsite, based in Whitehall, Central London.

The salary range reflects the approved grade band or a narrower range within it, benchmarked against the external market, and pay above the standard range goes through governance controls.

The company welcomes applicants from all backgrounds and asks you to say if you need accessibility support during recruitment.
