Senior C Developer

Description

The role is a hands-on senior engineering position on a large datacenter migration of a long-running payments platform, moving it from UNIX/AIX to Linux (RedHat) with applications refactored for AWS.

You will analyse, refactor and consolidate C applications, reasoning about system behaviour from solid systems fundamentals and working with a high degree of independence.

After the migration, there is scope to take on long-term BAU, project and client-integration work on the same platform.

Responsibilities

• Design, estimate and build technical solutions for applications of medium to high complexity.
• Take part in every phase of the application development lifecycle.
• Work with stakeholders to clarify requirements, processes, architecture and priorities.
• Advocate IT industry standards, tools and practices such as DevOps to produce well-built software.
• Suggest improvements and raise risks and issues tied to development work.
• Review the work of other developers on the team.
• Pick up new technologies, practices and tools when they suit the project.

Requirements

• At least 5 years of hands-on software development, with demonstrable depth in plain C.
• Strong UNIX skills on AIX and Linux (RedHat), including a record of porting and refactoring applications from AIX to Linux RedHat.
• Shell scripting in Korn (ksh) and Bash for build, run and deployment tasks on UNIX systems.
• Working knowledge of the C build and debug toolchain: Make and Makefiles, gcc, gdb and core-dump analysis.
• Experience refactoring and consolidating applications, including redesign during a migration.
• A self-starting approach, able to take end-to-end ownership of delivery.
• Clear communication, with the ability to explain solutions to technical and non-technical stakeholders.
• SQL and relational databases, DB2 and Oracle, including embedded SQL (ProC / ESQL/C) in C applications.
• Sockets, TCP/IP and inter-process communication (IPC) for integrations and messaging.
• Awareness of cross-platform porting issues such as endianness, data type sizes and compiler differences between AIX (POWER) and Linux (x86).
• Knowledge of payments or financial transaction processing, for example ISO 8583, card and transaction switching or PCI DSS.
• Git and GitHub, as the project is moving its source control from SCCS to GitHub.
• Exposure to Harness or a similar enterprise CI/CD tool such as Jenkins.
• Familiarity with AWS, since the migrated applications will run in the cloud while databases stay in a payments datacenter.
• Exposure to Linux administration, Docker or containerisation, or Terraform and infrastructure as code on the cloud target.
• Experience integrating with external clients and third-party systems.
