Senior Backend Software Engineer

Description

The company is a global technology company that moves and manages money across borders for people and businesses.

You would join the team building a new network for the world's money, starting with pricing and billing services for partners.

Responsibilities

• Lead the automation and centralisation of the pricing and billing systems partners rely on.
• Extend reconciliation systems so partner pricing and billing stay accurate.
• Design and build automated controls for pricing and billing that meet compliance rules and protect financial integrity.
• Build secure solutions for partners' complex needs, keeping the long-term architecture in view.
• Take features from design to delivery across pricing and billing services.
• Shape architecture and review code to raise quality, reliability and observability.
• Make the systems serving external partners and finance operations more resilient and scalable.
• Build auditable, extensible and fast systems with event-driven design using Kafka, MongoDB and MariaDB.
• Use AI tools across the development lifecycle to improve delivery and code quality.

Requirements

• Strong software engineering basics and a record of major contributions to impactful projects.
• Experience with Java or a similar object-oriented language.
• Ability to design systems for the long term, using patterns that allow safe change and growth.
• Accountability for the availability, reliability and security of what you build.
• Sound judgement in weighing speed, scale and risk, with resilience and safety first.
• Pragmatic handling of technical debt, planned within a suitable risk tolerance.
• Commitment to best practice in observability, security, testing, and responsible use of data and events.
• Ownership of deliverables from design through production.
• Ability to explain why something is built, which partner or business problem it solves, and the expected outcome.
• Willingness to own systems over the long term and help remove single points of failure.
• Active role in incident response and in learning from incidents afterwards.
• Steady, predictable delivery with a sustainable engineering rhythm.
• Take part in on-call support for your area when needed.
• Communicate clearly and work across functions toward team goals.
• Mentor other engineers and help onboard new joiners.
• Reduce duplicated effort and build shared understanding across the team.
• Contribute to wider engineering efforts, communities or guilds across the company.
• Take part in hiring and interviews using the company's interview practices.
• Experience in payments, fintech, billing or another regulated financial field.
• Experience with external partners or B2B integrations where accuracy and auditability matter.
• Experience with compliance, audit or regulatory systems.
• Familiarity with event-driven architecture, reconciliation or configuration-heavy domains.

Conditions

Starting salary of £87.5k to £111k, plus RSUs.

Only local candidates are being considered, and relocation support is not offered.
