Description

The company builds embodied AI that drives real vehicles, aiming to scale autonomy globally through AV2.0, an end-to-end AI driving system that learns and adapts across many driving environments.

The Safety team assures the safety of the automated driving system as it moves across vehicle platforms, applications and operating environments, and you would help design the framework that does this.

The role leads functional safety for the automated driving system, its integration into current and future vehicles, and third-party safety-critical systems, working with engineers, external partners and safety specialists.

The company works with global OEM partners on a mapless, hardware-agnostic platform that supports automation from L2+ to L4 and can be tailored to each OEM brand and driver experience.

Much of the way the company works is still being defined, so you would help shape its processes and enjoy taking ownership.

You do not need to meet every requirement to apply. If you care about autonomy and want to learn, apply anyway.

Responsibilities

  • Lead functional safety for the automated driving system and its integration into current and future vehicle platforms and third-party safety-critical systems.
  • Create and maintain Item Definitions for each vehicle platform and safety-critical integration.
  • Run HARAs, FMEAs and FTAs to find risks and define safety concepts that lower risk to a level judged acceptable.
  • Work with design teams on system architectures that meet the safety concept, making decomposition decisions and deriving software and external requirements.
  • Help software teams implement safety requirements on target hardware.
  • Write test specifications at each integration level, including vehicle-level verification and validation of the safety concept.
  • Build structured safety cases made of claims, arguments and evidence.
  • Contribute to production safety work products and improve safety processes with process and compliance teams for certification.

Requirements

  • At least 5 years of hands-on automotive functional safety experience applying ISO 26262 across different systems, with solid working knowledge of Parts 3, 4, 5, 6, 8 and 9.
  • Practical experience with ISO 26262 Part 6, including production software development and software tool qualification.
  • Experience running vehicle-level tests at proving grounds to verify and validate safety concepts.
  • Experience with HARA, FMEA and FTA, and the ability to turn findings into practical safety concepts, architectures and requirements.
  • Experience managing suppliers of safety-related hardware or software, including DIA definition, supplier audits and assessments.
  • Experience building safety cases for automated driving systems, including computer-vision-based systems, with enough neural network knowledge to discuss safety assurance with scientists and engineers.
  • Experience with SOTIF, including identifying triggering conditions and defining testing and validation strategies.
  • Operational safety experience, including identifying operational risks and defining training or procedures for safe public-road testing.
  • Ability to work well across software, hardware, systems and external partners, and to debate safety trade-offs at every level of the organisation.
  • Pragmatic in balancing risk and benefit in a fast-moving environment without lowering safety standards.
  • Self-starter who can move between long-term, high-level safety thinking and detailed subsystem or application-level problem solving, and who challenges ideas while staying open to feedback.

Conditions

Main hubs are in London, Sunnyvale, Yokohama, Herzliya, Vancouver and Leonberg.

Hybrid working: part of the week in dedicated offices for in-person collaboration, and part remote for focused work.

The interview process has four stages: a 30-minute recruiter screen, a hiring manager and competency interview on functional safety experience and approach, deep-dive technical interviews on functional safety, system safety and domain problems, and a final interview on mission and values.

The company explains the format of each stage and schedules around your availability.

The company is committed to an inclusive workplace and does not discriminate on sex, race, religion or belief, ethnic or national origin, disability, age, citizenship, marital, domestic or civil partnership status, sexual orientation, gender identity, veteran status, or pregnancy and related conditions.

Marriage, pregnancy, care responsibilities and disabilities are not asked about in adverts or interviews, though an optional DEI monitoring form collects this information to improve fairness.

Benefits

  • Salaries are benchmarked against the market every year.
  • Meaningful equity, so you share in the company's ownership and long-term success.
  • Relocation support, and visa sponsorship where applicable.
  • Hybrid working with core hours, plus hands-on work in vehicle workshops and labs.
  • Learning and development budget for training, conferences and career growth.
  • Health insurance, dental cover, enhanced maternity and paternity leave, retirement or pension where applicable, access to therapists, wellbeing partnerships, team socials and more.
