Description

The company is a nuclear technology firm in Bellevue, Washington, founded in 2006. It works on lower-cost, safer and cleaner nuclear power and on medical isotopes.

This role reports to the Manager, Transient Safety Analysis. The principal safety analysis engineer leads safety analyses for the demonstration reactor and supports transient design analysis, SSC classification, analytical model and method development, and uncertainty quantification and sensitivity calculations.

Responsibilities

  • Build system models and run safety analyses for anticipated operational occurrences, design basis events and design basis accidents on the demonstration reactor.
  • Work with cross-functional teams to set functional, performance, safety and quality requirements for the core and reactor SSCs, and help shape the overall design.
  • Help fold NEI 18-04 licensing basis event analyses and their findings into licensing documents and design work.
  • Support safety method development, including code assessment, scaling analysis, and code verification and validation.
  • Write and maintain documentation of model development and analysis results.
  • Review other engineering analyses and design outputs, such as ASME design transients.
  • Assess plant transient benchmark tests, select those that apply to the reactor, and run the benchmark calculations.
  • Help build the company's software framework for transient and accident analysis capabilities.

Requirements

  • Extensive experience in nuclear transient safety analysis, reactor system modeling, BEPU analysis and/or computer code development.
  • Extensive experience with safety analysis software such as RELAP5, TRACE, TRAC, SAS4A/SASSYS-1, GOTHIC, MELCOR, SAM, or other nuclear system analysis software.
  • Knowledge of nuclear thermal-hydraulics, reactor dynamics and transient phenomena.
  • Knowledge of reactor core physics, including neutron transport and reactivity feedback.
  • Knowledge of reactor instrumentation and control systems and how they are modeled in safety analysis codes.
  • Familiarity with nuclear design, regulatory requirements, and risk-informed, performance-based guidance for non-light water reactors is required.
  • Demonstrated strong quantitative, analytical, modeling and reporting skills.
  • Understanding of NQA-1 requirements for analysis and software management, and experience working under a quality assurance program.
  • Experience working in multidisciplinary engineering teams on engineering challenges.
  • A B.S., M.S. or Ph.D. in nuclear engineering or another relevant engineering field, with at least 5 years of experience in the nuclear field.
  • A high degree of trust and integrity, open communication, and respect for others with a desire to build teamwork.
  • This role is subject to qualification requirements under ANSI/ANS 3.1. You must meet its minimum education and experience criteria, including relevant nuclear industry experience where required. Your data will be verified during hiring.
  • Experience in transient and accident analysis for NRC submittals, such as Chapter 15 of the FSAR, is highly desired.
  • Familiarity with EMDAP and Regulatory Guide 1.203 is preferred.
  • Experience with SFR safety analysis or methods is highly desirable. Experience with other reactor designs, such as LWRs, can be considered.
  • Strong software engineering skills in a language such as Python, Fortran or C++ are a plus.
