Principal, Data Scientist (Marketplace Risk)

Description

This group builds data science work for a quickly growing online marketplace where sellers run their own digital storefronts and manage listings, pricing and inventory.

The team supports the experience before and after an order, using real-time data and connections to partner platforms across the company's wider ecosystem.

The team builds scalable, dependable systems and works across functions on technology plans that support long-term growth.

Responsibilities

• Lead the building and rollout of advanced machine learning models that address hard business problems.
• Own the full model lifecycle, from data and features through modelling to deployment.
• Find the root causes of complex business problems and propose technical approaches to solve them.
• Find, assess and validate data sources for quality and fit with analytical models.
• Lead feature engineering, exploratory analysis and model evaluation to improve performance and robustness.
• Act as a thought leader, working with product and business stakeholders to take prototypes into scaled, deployed data science products.
• Turn business needs into scalable data science strategies with measurable results.
• Mentor colleagues on modelling techniques, data visualization and good practice.
• Track new machine learning trends and automation tools and bring the useful ones into the work.

Requirements

• A PhD in computer science or a related field plus 10 years of relevant data science experience, or a master's in a related field plus 12 years of relevant experience.
• Experience designing large-scale machine learning systems.
• Deep, extensive experience with machine learning algorithms, deep learning and reinforcement learning for advanced analytical models.
• Proven work with state-of-the-art agentic, Gen AI, supervised and unsupervised methods on real problems, preferably in the e-commerce domain.
• Proficiency in Python and AWS SageMaker for scalable model development and deployment.
• Strong statistics and exploratory data analysis skills for interpreting complex data.
• Ability to turn business requirements into data-driven strategies and measurable outcomes.
• Skill in identifying data sources, assessing their quality and managing the data ecosystem.
• Proven leadership in mentoring technical teams and guiding them toward new solutions.
• Clear communication, able to present insights and influence stakeholders.
• Preferred: experience in the e-commerce domain.
• Preferred: experience in the fraud or risk domain.
• Preferred: success on data science platforms such as Kaggle.

Conditions

Full-time and onsite in Bellevue, WA. Remote and hybrid options are not available.
