Description

This Staff Software Engineer role sits in the payment capture and order management teams of a large e-commerce platform, which includes quick-service restaurant ordering.

The team works on the systems that take payments and manage orders from start to finish, and the role is a senior hands-on position within it.

Responsibilities

  • Build highly available, fault-tolerant payment capture microservices that handle millions of transactions each day.
  • Own a critical payment capture service that processes every payment type on the platform.
  • Create reusable frameworks so new payment instruments, such as prepaid cards, dual-network debit cards, digital rewards and buy-now-pay-later providers, can be connected quickly.
  • Design asynchronous, event-driven payment pipelines on Apache Kafka with an Avro schema registry so financial events stay reliable and schema-validated.
  • Build low-latency, globally distributed payment transaction storage on Azure Cosmos DB, including TTL-based archival and automated data lifecycle management.
  • Deliver order lifecycle features: refund SLA enforcement, reworked order state signals, driver tipping flows, product SKU resolution, and restaurant partner ID mapping for multi-chain quick-service restaurant operators.
  • Run containerised microservices on a Kubernetes cloud-native platform, managed through declarative YAML, central feature flag and configuration services, and automated canary deployments.
  • Investigate and resolve critical production payment incidents as part of an on-call rotation, keeping detection and recovery times low using logs, Grafana and Kubernetes monitoring.
  • Set up observability for payment capture: baseline alert thresholds, playbooks for CPU, memory, pod health, response time, exception rate and payment-specific failures, and lead other teams in alert-driven on-call.
  • Write end-to-end regression suites for quick-service restaurant order flows to confirm order management correctness in every environment.
  • Guide engineers across payment capture and order management through technical advice, code reviews and knowledge sharing, including training on Kafka practice, observability tools and payment architecture.
  • Use object-oriented design patterns and SOLID principles in your code, run peer reviews and hold the team to code quality standards.

Requirements

  • A master's degree or equivalent in computer science, engineering or a related field, plus 3 years in large-scale enterprise software development; or a bachelor's degree or equivalent in those fields, plus 6 years in the same kind of environment.
  • Experience of any length with the skills below is acceptable.
  • Hands-on experience building distributed order search with Apache Solr and SolrCloud, covering schema design, atomic partial updates on multi-valued fields, snapshot delta incremental indexing, composite keys and large index upkeep.
  • Experience building event-driven financial streaming with Apache Kafka and Kafka Avro with Schema Registry, publishing schema-validated payment lifecycle events.
  • Experience with payment capture: deferred authorization (pre-authorization holds with delayed settlement), retries for transient failures, idempotent handling of non-retryable errors, EBT/SNAP, third-party digital wallets and unified payment platform migration.
  • Experience with Apache Cassandra and Azure Cosmos DB for high-throughput financial transaction storage, including TTL archival and data lifecycle management.
  • Experience designing microservice architectures and extensible REST APIs for large-scale e-commerce order management.
  • Experience tuning high-throughput distributed order systems: database compression, index management, Solr collection reloads and Cassandra schema optimisation.
  • Experience resolving critical production payment and order incidents with Grafana, log analysis tools and Kubernetes dashboards, reducing MTTD and MTTR.
  • Strong Java skills, including object-oriented programming, design patterns and SOLID principles, for payment and order microservices.
  • Experience raising code quality through unit tests, automation and code reviews, using JUnit, Mockito and Postman.
  • Experience with CI/CD using Jenkins, GitHub, Maven, Artifactory and Git.
  • Experience with Microsoft Azure services, including Azure Cosmos DB, Azure Blob Storage and Azure Kubernetes clusters.
  • Experience with Docker and Kubernetes to run large payment and order management services.
