Principal Data Engineer

Description

The company designs athletic apparel that moves from workouts into everyday life, with a casual look inspired by an active coastal California lifestyle.

This principal role covers the pipelines that load data into the platform and prepare it for analytics. You will set the technical direction for the wider data infrastructure, work with data engineers, modelers, analysts and product teams on what to build next, and raise the technical bar across the team.

Responsibilities

• Carry data through each stage from raw source to staging to curated, adding transformation, validation and testing at every step so it is ready for analysts.
• Build and maintain Azure Data Factory pipelines that orchestrate ingestion and transformation across source, curated and serving layers.
• Design reliable ways to land raw REST or SOAP API data, flat files (CSV, fixed-width), JSON and XML in the source layer before transforming it.
• Write resilient API extraction that handles pagination, rate limits, incremental or delta pulls, and schema drift from third-party sources.
• Flatten nested JSON objects and arrays into relational structures in Snowflake.
• Manage file ingestion at scale from SFTP and blob drops, including file validation, schema enforcement, and reprocessing or backfills for late or malformed files.
• Help build CI/CD for ADF pipelines, deploying through Azure DevOps or GitHub Actions to dev, UAT and prod.
• Set standards for pipeline design, code quality and testing, and mentor other data engineers.

Requirements

• Hands-on work with ADF, including pipelines, data flows, linked services, integration runtimes and triggers.
• Experience extracting and normalizing raw data from REST APIs, flat files, JSON/XML, and SFTP or blob drops.
• Able to write extraction code that handles pagination, authentication with API keys or OAuth, and incremental sync.
• Experience parsing and modeling nested JSON in a cloud data warehouse such as Snowflake (VARIANT, FLATTEN).
• 8+ years in data engineering or a related field, including senior or technical lead experience.
• Strong SQL and proficiency in Python, Scala or Java.
• Strong communication skills and experience working across analytics, product and engineering teams.
• Bachelor's degree in computer science, engineering or a related field; equivalent practical experience is preferred.
• Experience with dbt or similar transformation frameworks.
• Familiarity with infrastructure-as-code (Terraform, ARM/Bicep) and broader CI/CD practices.
• Exposure to real-time analytics or streaming technologies.

Conditions

Salary range is $181,000 to $242,000 per year.

This role is bonus eligible.
