This Level 3 network engineer role provides advanced support, troubleshooting, implementation and management of enterprise networks spanning several technologies and vendors. You are the escalation point for complex network incidents and work with L1/L2 engineers, infrastructure and cybersecurity teams, vendors and business stakeholders to keep the network stable, secure and highly available.

Responsibilities

  • Handle complex incidents escalated from L1 and L2 teams, and lead troubleshooting during major incidents and critical outages.
  • Troubleshoot complex faults across LAN, WAN, Internet, WLAN, VPN, routing, switching and firewalls, using logs, packet captures, routing tables and monitoring tools.
  • Carry out root cause analysis and recommend permanent fixes.
  • Mentor and guide L1 and L2 network engineers.
  • Administer and support a multi-vendor estate: Cisco routers, switches, Catalyst and Nexus; Fortinet FortiGate firewalls, VPNs and policies, with FortiManager and FortiAnalyzer where used; Palo Alto next-generation firewalls, policies and VPNs; Juniper routers, switches and platforms; UniFi wireless and LAN; and Cisco Meraki switches, access points, security appliances and cloud-managed networking.
  • Configure and troubleshoot BGP, OSPF, VLAN, STP, VRF, trunking, LACP/EtherChannel and inter-VLAN routing.
  • Analyse routing paths and traffic to find performance and connectivity problems, and support redundancy, high availability and failover designs.
  • Configure, troubleshoot and maintain Fortinet and Palo Alto firewalls, including policies, NAT, VPNs, routing and security profiles.
  • Troubleshoot application connectivity and firewall issues, and work with cybersecurity teams on network security needs.
  • Review and apply firewall changes through the approved change-management process.
  • Support wireless across Cisco, Meraki, UniFi and other platforms, covering connectivity, authentication, coverage and performance.
  • Support SD-WAN and Internet connectivity where applicable, and watch network performance to spot problems early.
  • Take part in migrations, upgrades, refreshes and improvement projects, including device upgrades, configuration changes and technology moves.
  • Prepare implementation and rollback plans, validate changes before and after they go live, and coordinate with internal teams, vendors and stakeholders.
  • Own complex incidents until they are resolved, give technical updates during major incident management, and run detailed RCA on critical and recurring issues.
  • Find ways to improve reliability and reduce repeat incidents, and keep technical knowledge articles and troubleshooting procedures current.
  • Document all network changes and communicate them properly.

Requirements

  • A diploma or degree in IT, computer science, networking or a related field.
  • 5 to 8+ years of network engineering experience, including strong L3 troubleshooting.
  • Hands-on experience running enterprise networks.
  • Experience in a multi-vendor environment.
  • Strong grasp of TCP/IP, DNS, DHCP, NAT, VLAN, STP, QoS, VPN and network security.
  • Strong hands-on routing and switching skills, with good knowledge of BGP and OSPF.
  • Strong troubleshooting with packet captures and diagnostic tools, and experience with network monitoring and management platforms.
  • Working knowledge of Cisco routing, switching, Catalyst and Nexus; Fortinet FortiGate, firewalls, VPN and security policies; Palo Alto NGFW, policies, VPN and NAT; Juniper routing, switching and troubleshooting; Cisco Meraki switching, wireless and security appliances; and UniFi switching, wireless and management.
  • Experience across several vendors is highly preferred.
  • CCNP, JNCIP, Fortinet, Palo Alto or equivalent certifications are preferred.
  • ITIL experience and knowledge of incident, problem and change management.
  • Experience supporting regional or global environments is an advantage.
  • Strong analytical and technical troubleshooting skills, and the ability to work on complex issues independently.
  • Strong ownership, accountability, and communication and stakeholder management.
  • Ability to stay effective under pressure during major incidents.
  • Good documentation and reporting, a proactive approach to monitoring and prevention, and the ability to mentor L1 and L2 engineers.

Conditions
