The company is a large global bank with about 200 million customer accounts, operating in more than 160 countries and jurisdictions. It serves consumers, corporations, governments and institutions across consumer banking, credit, corporate and investment banking, brokerage, transaction services and wealth management.
The enterprise operations and technology group builds the digital architecture and platforms behind the company's customer experience, security and internal tools.
This is a senior role combining hands-on engineering with strategic architecture work on one of the company's major transformation programs in retail services. You will help decide how microservices, containerized applications and hybrid cloud work together to power financial products for millions of customers.
The role covers the current production environment and the move toward a next-generation target architecture, so you will need to work carefully in a complex system while also charting where it goes next.
You will bring 8+ years of infrastructure and software engineering experience and work with engineering squads, business partners and technology leaders across the application lifecycle, from design and trade-off analysis to performance work in high-throughput Java systems.
The company is looking for someone who treats architecture as a craft, sees infrastructure as a strategic asset and can lead transformation work alongside others.
Responsibilities
Lead design and development of mid-size features through to completion, act as development lead on medium projects and support larger efforts.
Work with considerable autonomy, shaping application design through subject expertise and a deep understanding of programming principles.
Diagnose coding, performance and design problems, find root causes and fix defects.
Own the technical requirements of what you build and understand what it takes to build, run and maintain it through every phase of its life.
Map dependencies including hardware, platform, operating system, performance and load needs, and contingencies with upstream and downstream systems.
Understand the main system flows and how the application fits with architecture and infrastructure to meet business goals. Help set standards for coding, testing, debugging and implementation so designs match the architecture blueprint.
Lead design discussions as a key decision maker, drawing on knowledge of the code and experience with the technology and teams involved.
Work with little guidance: the delivery strategy is set for you, but you define the design.
Turn complex designs into well-written applications.
Work with industry vendors on technology and user experience components for the digital architecture, plan roadmaps with them and find partnership opportunities that speed development and build learning.
Take part in the full development life cycle, manage dependencies between agile and waterfall delivery and execute test plans and quality work within broad parameters.
Influence strategic functional decisions through advice and services, using clear communication and diplomacy to persuade others.
Report progress, spot bottlenecks, manage escalations and identify, assess, track and mitigate issues and risks at multiple levels.
Resolve differing views through constructive dialogue.
Work across teams to improve processes and the delivery of concurrent projects.
Review metrics regularly and look for better ways to gain visibility, keeping the program aligned with organizational objectives.
Continually assess development processes, test plans and operations, and remove process overhead that repeats year over year across architecture, build, delivery, production and business areas.
Share knowledge in brown bags and engineering forums and build expertise through industry certifications.
Assess risk in business decisions with attention to the firm's reputation, clients and assets, drive compliance with laws, rules, regulations and policy, and escalate and report control issues openly.
Requirements
5+ years of hands-on experience in infrastructure and software engineering, having delivered high-performance, production-grade applications at enterprise scale.
Strong analytical and quantitative skills. You are data-driven and results-focused, able to weigh complex trade-offs and turn findings into clear engineering decisions.
Proven agile delivery, including sprint planning, retrospectives and iterative releases within large cross-functional teams.
Deep Java expertise for high-performance computing, including designing and tuning multi-threaded, distributed enterprise applications built as microservices.
Hands-on experience designing, implementing and evolving microservices architectures, with a solid grasp of design patterns, service decomposition and API contract management.
A proven record of modernizing a technology stack or moving to next-generation platforms: assessing current state, defining target blueprints and executing migrations.
Hands-on cloud experience with AWS (EC2, S3, Lambda, RDS, EKS) or Microsoft Azure (AKS, Functions, Cosmos DB), building scalable cloud-native solutions in hybrid cloud environments.
Proficiency in Java, Python 3.10+ or TypeScript, with deep experience building and maintaining high-throughput enterprise applications at scale.
Experience with Docker and Kubernetes, with OpenShift or Amazon EKS preferred, designing, deploying and troubleshooting containerized applications in production hybrid cloud environments.
Experience with TIBCO, Apache Kafka or MuleSoft, designing event-driven and message-based architectures for high-volume, mission-critical financial services platforms.
Strong knowledge of Jenkins, GitLab CI/CD, GitHub Actions or ArgoCD, with experience automating build, test and deployment workflows at scale across large teams.
Proficiency with PostgreSQL, MongoDB, Oracle or Redis, including performance tuning, schema design and data modeling for high-throughput transactional systems.
Experience with Prometheus, Grafana, ELK Stack or Splunk for monitoring and observability, focused on reliability, SLA adherence and uptime in production.
Experience with architecture trade-off analysis using structured models such as ATAM or ADRs, weighing competing designs for performance, cost and maintainability.
Skilled at working with third-party providers and technology vendors to align implementation plans with strategic roadmaps.
Excellent written and spoken communication, explaining complex technical ideas clearly to engineering peers and non-technical stakeholders.
Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience.
