Description

You will lead a team of engineers based in Europe that builds, runs and improves scalable web-scraping capabilities. You report to a Senior Manager or Director and split your time between people leadership, technical delivery, operations and work with other functions. You are responsible for the performance and growth of the individual contributors in Europe, and you work with global Engineering, Product, Data Operations and delivery teams to turn priorities into dependable results.

The company is a consumer intelligence firm that helps clients understand buying behavior and find growth. It was formed in 2023 through a combination with GfK, operates in 100+ markets covering more than 90% of the world's population, and is a portfolio company of Advent International. The web data acquisition group collects and transforms public digital-commerce data for data-driven products and customer insights.

Success in the role means the team has clear priorities, is engaged, is coached well and delivers reliably. Scraping services become more predictable, observable, maintainable and resilient. New and changed data sources ship with suitable quality controls and are ready to run in production. Stakeholders see delivery status, capacity, risks and trade-offs in good time. Technical debt and repeat operational issues are steadily reduced.

Responsibilities

  • Manage, coach and develop Europe-based engineers and associates through clear goals, frequent feedback, career planning and accountability for performance.
  • Shape a high-trust, inclusive culture that rewards ownership, learning, engineering quality and continuous improvement.
  • Plan capacity, skills growth, hiring, onboarding, succession cover and workload for the Europe team.
  • Set out priorities, decision rights, delivery expectations and escalation paths so everyone knows where they stand.
  • Lead design, build, testing, release and upkeep of web scrapers and the services that support them.
  • Keep retailer and marketplace data flowing reliably despite changing sites, anti-bot defenses, data-quality needs and operating limits.
  • Keep delivery predictable across new-source onboarding, change requests, production support, technical debt and platform work.
  • Use delivery and operational metrics to spot risks, clear blockers and raise throughput, quality and resilience.
  • Set practical standards for code quality, reviews, testing, observability, documentation, security and production readiness.
  • Improve automation, monitoring, alerting, failure diagnosis and recovery, and make sure root causes are followed through on scraping workflows.
  • Weigh short-term delivery against maintainability, scalability, cost and alignment with the platform.
  • Encourage responsible collection practices that follow NIQ policies, contract terms and legal guidance.
  • Work with Product, Engineering, Data Operations, Customer Success and delivery teams to clarify requirements and set the order of work.
  • Report delivery health, dependencies, technical risks, trade-offs and recovery plans to senior stakeholders.
  • Coordinate with peer managers and technical leads in other locations, while your direct people management covers Europe-based associates only.
  • Take part in planning, architecture discussions, operational reviews and continuous-improvement work for web data acquisition.

Requirements

  • Have experience managing software engineers or data-engineering staff, including goal setting, coaching, performance management and career development.
  • Bring a solid software engineering background, with production systems built in a modern language such as Python, Java, C or JavaScript/TypeScript.
  • Have experience with web scraping, browser automation, crawling, data pipelines, distributed systems or high-volume data collection.
  • Understand HTTP, HTML/DOM, APIs, proxies, browser behavior, monitoring, incident response and production support.
  • Can lead delivery when requirements are unclear, operations are under strain and priorities compete.
  • Communicate well in writing and speech, including explaining technical risks and trade-offs to people without a technical background.
  • Have worked with stakeholders spread across functions and geographies.
  • Preferred: Experience with retailer, marketplace, digital-commerce or digital-shelf data.
  • Preferred: Experience running cloud-based services and automated data-processing workflows.
  • Preferred: Familiarity with anti-bot techniques, headless browsers, scraper observability, data-quality controls and resilient extraction patterns.
  • Preferred: Experience improving team operating rhythms, delivery metrics, incident practices and engineering productivity.
  • Preferred: Experience hiring and scaling engineering teams.
