Description

The team builds new firmware for solid state drives and works in Agile sprints, so clear communication with colleagues across the organisation matters.

You will apply and extend your knowledge of embedded architecture, external interfaces and product constraints, designing features that fit those limits while adding real value to the platform.

You will work with storage interface standards including NVMe, PCIe, SATA and SAS.

Responsibilities

  • Write, review, document and maintain product source code in C/C++.
  • Build firmware against internal and customer specifications.
  • Run unit and system tests, and investigate failures and product defects during development and validation.
  • Develop low-level firmware and system, device and operating system architectures with hardware and ASIC design teams.
  • Work across several firmware areas and grow your knowledge of the whole SSD architecture.
  • Turn product requirements into development and validation plans with project stakeholders.
  • Lead by example in an Agile and Kanban culture that values quality, ownership and continuous improvement.
  • Align priorities with other engineering groups to hit committed milestones.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science or a related field.
  • 7+ years of experience developing, validating or optimising embedded firmware for SSDs or other NAND flash storage products.
  • 7+ years of experience with SSD architecture and standards such as NVMe, PCIe, NAND interfaces, error correction and flash translation layer (FTL) design.
  • 7+ years of experience debugging complex firmware problems on pre-production and production hardware, including failure triage, log and telemetry analysis, and taking issues to closure with firmware, hardware and validation teams.
  • 7+ years of C/C++ development in embedded environments, using tools such as Git, Python and C/C++ debuggers.
  • Preferred: media management for NAND flash, covering data placement, wear levelling, garbage collection, defect management and endurance or reliability tuning.
  • Preferred: designing, implementing and debugging firmware algorithms that improve latency, throughput and consistent performance under sustained real workloads.
  • Preferred: analysing drive-level performance and telemetry to find bottlenecks and turning results into firmware or media-management changes.
  • Preferred: bringing up, characterising or qualifying new NAND generations and turning the results into firmware policy changes.
  • Preferred: building data-driven media-management algorithms that improve SSD performance, endurance, reliability and quality of service.
  • Preferred: strong communication and interpersonal skills, working both independently and in teams across multiple sites.
  • Preferred items are a plus factor and sit on top of the minimum requirements.
