The team builds and changes software for a large financial company, working in a fast-paced, collaborative setting where each release is improved in short cycles.

Responsibilities

• Lead a set of varied technology projects and a group of developers who have deep experience with distributed microservices and full stack systems, building solutions that address the company's regulatory obligations.
• Keep up with technology trends, try and learn new tools, take part in internal and external technical communities, and mentor other engineers.
• Work with digital product managers to deliver sturdy cloud-based solutions that give millions of Americans better tools to reach financial independence.
• Work with languages and tools including Java, Scala, Python, Go, Node.js, JavaScript, TypeScript, open source relational and NoSQL databases, Docker, Kubernetes and a range of AWS services.
• Give technical direction to Agile teams and set standards for design, development and operations.
• Work with architects to define service boundaries, integration patterns and reusable frameworks.
• Spot areas that need work, refactor where needed, and help reduce technical debt and improve system performance.
• Shape long-term technology strategy by assessing new tools and practices, in an environment where teams build and then own what they ship.

Requirements

• A bachelor's degree or higher in computer science or a related quantitative field such as statistics, economics, operations research, analytics, mathematics or engineering.
• At least 4 years of professional software engineering experience. Internships do not count.
• At least 2 years of experience with public cloud platforms such as AWS, GCP or Azure, cloud productivity tools, or virtualization technologies.
• Preferred: a master's degree in computer science or a related field.
• Preferred: 7+ years of coding experience in more than two of Go, Java, JavaScript/TypeScript, Python, Rust, C and Scala.
• Preferred: 3+ years working with databases and database management systems.
• Preferred: 3+ years with AWS, GCP, Azure, cloud productivity tools or virtualization technologies.
• Preferred: 4+ years contributing to open source frameworks.
• Preferred: 3+ years with front-end JavaScript or TypeScript frameworks.
• Preferred: 4+ years building synchronous and asynchronous APIs.
• Preferred: 3+ years with CI/CD pipelines, infrastructure as code and automated testing frameworks.
• Preferred: 3+ years using Git-based version control such as Git, GitHub or Bitbucket.
• Preferred: 3+ years troubleshooting technical issues in cloud environments.
• Preferred: experience using modern AI-based coding tools and IDE copilots.
• Preferred: 1+ year mentoring engineers and supporting their professional growth on technical teams.
• Preferred: 1+ year using observability to find and fix performance bottlenecks in distributed systems.
• Preferred: experience using interactive AI tools for productivity beyond basic code completion.
• Preferred: experience leading cross-functional engineering work or large technical initiatives.
• Preferred: experience setting and enforcing coding standards and design patterns across teams.

Conditions

Base salary for McLean, VA is $197,300 to $225,100 per year for full-time work. Part-time pay is prorated to the agreed hours. Candidates hired in other locations get the range for that location, and the exact offer is stated in the offer letter.

The role is eligible for performance-based incentive pay, which may include cash bonuses and or long-term incentives. Incentives may be discretionary or non-discretionary depending on the plan.
