Description

You will have a direct effect on the business by designing and building data solutions that change how the Corporate Services and HR business partners work. You act as the link between business needs and technical delivery, learning how current processes run, spotting where they waste effort, and turning those gaps into automation with enterprise tools that pay back quickly. The role combines hands-on technical leadership with strategy: you design end-to-end solutions, build working prototypes, and coach the team on design thinking and agentic development so each solution produces clear efficiency gains for stakeholders.

This role reports to the Associate Director, BTS Corporate Services, in the Business Technology Solutions department. The team sets direction for how data, analytics and AI automation improve enterprise systems and works alongside business partners and technical implementers to deliver it. The role is hybrid, with on-site work required Tuesday through Thursday each week in Lake County, IL.

Responsibilities

  • Work closely with Corporate Services and HR stakeholders to learn their current processes, problems, limits, future requirements and success measures, then shape those into technical designs that save measurable effort.
  • Build scalable data engineering solutions with clean, production-ready code that connects to enterprise systems and improves business partner workflows.
  • Move fast with prototypes and iterative builds, test working MVPs with stakeholders, and refine them from feedback to shorten time to value.
  • Build relationships across teams and keep growing your technical knowledge, finding existing capabilities, shared platforms and joint opportunities that make better use of internal resources and raise productivity.

Requirements

  • Required: A bachelor's degree with 7 years of experience, a master's degree with 6 years of experience, or a PhD with 2 years of relevant experience.
  • Required: Expert-level Python and SQL for production code used in pipeline automation, LLM enrichment and enterprise integrations.
  • Required: Experience building batch and real-time data pipelines with tools such as Apache Spark, Apache Kafka, Apache Flink, Databricks or equivalent platforms.
  • Required: Experience with modern cloud data platforms and services on Azure, AWS or Google Cloud.
  • Required: Solid understanding of data modeling, data warehousing, data lakes and data lakehouse architectures.
  • Required: Experience putting data quality, observability, lineage, metadata management, governance and security in place.
  • Required: Familiarity with orchestration tools such as Apache Airflow, dbt, Prefect or similar.
  • Required: Experience preparing enterprise data for AI engineering, including embedding and vectorization pipelines, retrieval-augmented generation and semantic search, vector databases or vector search, and generative and agentic AI applications.
  • Required: A record of delivering and maintaining production software in enterprise settings, including ongoing support, monitoring and continuous improvement.
  • Required: Strong analytical and diagnostic skills, with the ability to understand business processes and find automation opportunities.
  • Required: Wide technical range across software development, data integration, cloud platforms and enterprise systems, and quick learning of new technologies.
  • Required: Clear written and spoken communication, including explaining technical ideas to non-technical audiences.
  • Required: Work with high autonomy and little supervision, manage stakeholder expectations, and keep leadership informed through concise updates.
  • Required: Ability to mentor technical staff, lead cross-functional teams and carry initiatives through to completion.
  • Preferred: Experience in the pharmaceutical industry or another highly regulated field.
  • Preferred: Knowledge of SDLC methods, GxP compliance and validation requirements.
  • Preferred: Experience working with international development teams across multiple time zones.
  • Preferred: Exposure to graph databases and GraphQL is a plus.
