Description

The company supports the Office of the Inspector General at the Department of Homeland Security, and this role focuses on recording how AI tools are tested and used in federal oversight, where precision matters as much as it does in an audit or investigation.

You will turn the output of AI engineers, data engineers, and analysts into accurate documents that government decision-makers, reviewers, and future teams can depend on.

This is a full time, regular position with up to 10% local travel.

You will produce the deliverables for each OIG AI pilot, from charters and solution designs to validation reports and hand-off packages, and you will build data dictionaries that become the first entries in the enterprise data catalog on the new data platform. You will coordinate with the AI and data use-case program manager, AI engineers, and government product owners so every pilot is clear enough to approve, run, and extend.

Responsibilities

  • Write and keep current pilot charters, requirements, and solution designs for each AI pilot, drawing on discovery sessions, engineering notes, and input from government product owners.
  • Record test plans, validation approaches and outcomes, and user acceptance results in reports that show reviewers how each pilot was tested and where its reliability ends.
  • Prepare transition and knowledge-transfer packages with runbooks, administrator guides, known limitations, and hand-off checklists, finished before a pilot is closed so operations staff and the help desk can support it.
  • Create data dictionaries and dataset documentation for each pilot covering sources, fields, definitions, sensitivity, lineage, owners, stewards, and approved uses, ready to feed the enterprise data catalog.
  • Document responsible AI details for each pilot, including intended use, data, evaluation results, human review steps, and limits, using one consistent format.
  • Rewrite technical analyses, decision packages, and recommendations in plain language for non-technical government leaders without losing accuracy.
  • Interview AI engineers, data engineers, UX researchers, and government subject matter experts to check accuracy, and manage review cycles and versions through government acceptance.
  • Apply document standards, templates, and naming rules, and keep the document library current so each deliverable can be located from the service it supports.
  • Make sure deliverables meet Section 508 accessibility rules and handle SPII, Law Enforcement Sensitive, and FOUO material under DHS and OIG rules.
  • Support quality checks and contract delivery schedules, and report documentation status for monthly progress reports.

Requirements

  • Required: An associate's degree plus 6 years of technical writing or documentation experience for software, data, or IT systems. Equivalents are accepted: a bachelor's degree plus 4 years, or 8 years with no degree.
  • Required: U.S. citizenship and the ability to obtain and keep a DHS Public Trust High Risk fitness determination.
  • Required: A proven record of writing technical documents for software or data systems, such as requirements, design papers, test reports, runbooks, or user guides, built from interviews with engineers and experts.
  • Required: Experience documenting data through dictionaries, data models, metadata, or catalog entries, covering definitions, lineage, and sensitivity.
  • Required: Experience producing Section 508 conformant documents and following style guides, templates, and version control in a federal or other regulated setting.
  • Required: Ability to make complex technical material clear and accurate for readers without technical backgrounds.
  • Desired: Familiarity with AI and generative AI concepts such as model evaluation, output validation, prompts, and retrieval, plus documentation methods like model cards.
  • Desired: Experience with data catalog or governance tools such as Unity Catalog, Microsoft Purview, or Collibra, and with platforms like Databricks or Microsoft Azure.
  • Desired: A certification such as CPTC or DHS Trusted Tester, and experience with Confluence, SharePoint, Jira, or docs-as-code tools like Git and Markdown.
  • Desired: Background in federal oversight, audit, investigative, law enforcement, or legal documentation where accuracy and evidence standards apply.

Conditions

No minimum security clearance is needed to start.

The role is mostly remote, with on-site work at DHS OIG headquarters in Washington, DC when requested, during core hours of 7:00 AM to 7:00 PM Eastern.

The proposed salary range is $70,800 - $148,600. Final pay depends on location, federal contract labor categories and wage rates, relevant experience, specific skills, education, and certifications.

The company values flexibility that helps employees balance quality work with their personal lives.

Benefits

  • Flexible time off that lets you take the time you need.
  • Access to learning resources to support your professional goals.
  • Comprehensive benefits including healthcare, wellness, financial, retirement, family support, continuing education, and time-off options.
