Description

This role is a Ground MILSATCOM Systems Engineer position at Level 3 or Level 4, based in Seal Beach, CA, within the defense and space unit's Space & Mission Systems MILSATCOM program.

You will help shape the next generation of satellite ground mission planning systems, guiding part of the ground system software work and its programs in an agile setting.

The work includes requirements analysis, interface design, ground systems architecture, integration, testing, verification, and demonstrations that show the system meets customer intent. You will also learn the company's processes and procedures.

The team builds ground planning software with supplier and contractor software, systems engineering, and test groups, working closely with customers from requirements through test documentation. It is a collaborative team with a long-term path into technical or management roles.

Mid-level (Level 3) and Lead (Level 4) candidates are both considered.

Responsibilities

  • Plan, design, develop, and verify complex, lifecycle-balanced systems of systems using an interdisciplinary, collaborative approach.
  • Assess customer and operational needs, define system performance requirements, and make sure physical, functional, and program interfaces are compatible.
  • Run analyses to optimize the overall system of systems or its architecture.
  • Analyze affordability, safety, reliability, maintainability, testability, human systems integration, survivability, vulnerability, susceptibility, security, regulatory, certification, and product assurance, and turn the results into a preferred configuration that protects mission success.
  • Build, maintain, and improve requirements management processes and tools, plus risk, issue, opportunity, and technology readiness assessment processes.
  • Support government and interface working groups.
  • Resolve technical issues that cut across functional areas.

Requirements

  • Hold an active U.S. Top Secret security clearance. U.S. citizenship is required. A clearance active within the past 24 months counts as active.
  • Hold a Bachelor of Science in engineering, engineering technology (including manufacturing technology), computer science, data science, mathematics, physics, or chemistry, or a non-U.S. equivalent directly related to the work.
  • Have at least 5 years of engineering experience.
  • Be willing to travel within the United States as needed.
  • Have strong oral and written communication skills, including presenting at major program reviews and leading the technical content of system documents.
  • Understand version control and system quality attributes such as testability, portability, and maintainability.
  • Work well with systems engineers, analysts, software developers, and other Integrated Product Team members, and work in a self-driven, collaborative way.
  • Have experience in ground system engineering, software integration and test, and formal qualification.
  • Preferred: Lead (Level 4) candidates have at least 9 years of engineering experience.
  • Preferred: A bachelor's degree or higher in electrical engineering, computer engineering, or aerospace engineering.
  • Preferred: Experience with Agile and model-based engineering processes.
  • Preferred: Basic knowledge of orbital dynamics.
  • Preferred: Experience with RF communications, satellite links, transponder loading, and military communication architectures.
  • Preferred: Experience managing satellite bus and payload resources.
  • Preferred: Working knowledge of key MILSATCOM systems.
  • For Level 3, typical preparation is an accredited technical degree plus about 5 or more years of related work, or an equivalent mix of education and experience. For Level 4, it is an accredited technical degree plus about 9 or more years of related work, or an equivalent mix. ABET accreditation is preferred in the U.S. but not required.
