Description

You will join the Ports and Maritime team as a graduate ports engineer, working in a technical role across UK and international projects. Your academic background should be in civil or structural engineering.

The team has more than 200 years of combined experience in maritime and coastal infrastructure. Its clients include local authorities, private developers, defence clients, and the company's own teams in the UK and overseas.

Over time you will build skills in the design, analysis and supervision of civil and structural works in marine and coastal settings. Typical work covers new and rehabilitated port and harbour structures, including quay walls, jetties, piers, revetments, breakwaters, dolphins, fendering, linkspan supports and scour protection.

You will work across the project lifecycle, from concept and feasibility to detailed design and construction support, with solutions that are safe, sustainable and meet UK and international standards.

Sectors include renewable energy, infrastructure decarbonisation, global goods movement, defence resilience, cruise ports, historic structure rehabilitation, marinas, waterfront development, the fishing industry and ferry terminals.

The company is an infrastructure consultancy offering advisory, planning, design, engineering, programme and construction management services. It is a Fortune 500 firm with Professional Services revenue of $16.1 billion in fiscal year 2025 and a global team of over 50,000 people.

Responsibilities

  • Carry out structural design and analysis of maritime and coastal structures using codes such as BS, Eurocodes, PIANC, CIRIA and ICE guidance.
  • Use software including ROBOT, GRLWEAP, WALLAP, TEDDS and PLAXIS 3D, plus others as needed.
  • Produce concept, preliminary and detailed designs for new build and refurbishment, covering quay walls, jetties, revetments, breakwaters, dolphins and linkspans.
  • Assess the stability, bearing capacity and durability of marine structures exposed to waves, currents and corrosion.
  • Design and specify fendering systems, mooring arrangements and scour protection.
  • Write and review technical reports, design drawings, specifications and tender documents.
  • Carry out site inspections and structural condition surveys, and write the inspection reports.
  • Liaise with clients, contractors, port authorities and regulatory bodies.
  • Work alongside geotechnical, hydraulic, environmental and coastal process engineers.
  • Learn and apply health and safety, environmental and CDM requirements.
  • Support construction, review contractor submissions and answer site queries.
  • Share knowledge within the team and help improve how it works.

Requirements

  • Hold a BEng (Hons) in civil or structural engineering with a 2:1 or higher, or an equivalent, or a similar maritime engineering qualification.
  • Be familiar with relevant British Standards and Eurocodes.
  • Communicate well in writing and verbally, and work with multidisciplinary teams and clients.
  • Have the right to work in the UK and be able to obtain SC clearance with no caveats. This role is open to UK nationals only.
  • Advantage: an MEng (Hons) in civil or structural engineering.
  • Ideally, a final year project in port, marine or coastal engineering, which is advantageous.
  • Include a covering letter, your predicted or obtained academic grades, the dates you can work from and to, and the locations you would consider.

Conditions

The role starts in 2027.

Work can be hybrid, from a company office, remotely or at a client site.
