Description

The company's ports and maritime team is hiring a graduate ports engineer with a civil or structural academic background. The role starts in 2027 and supports technical work on UK and international projects.

The team has more than 200 years of combined experience designing maritime and coastal infrastructure. Its clients include local authorities, private developers, defence customers, and other company teams in the UK and overseas.

You will build skills in designing, analysing and supervising civil and structural works in marine and coastal settings. Typical work covers building, repairing and protecting port and harbour structures such as quay walls, jetties, piers, revetments, breakwaters, dolphins, fendering, linkspan supports and scour protection.

You will work across the project lifecycle, from concept and feasibility through detailed design to construction support. Solutions must be safe, sustainable and meet UK and international standards.

Sectors served include renewable energy, infrastructure decarbonisation, global goods movement, defence resilience, cruise ports, historic structure rehabilitation, marinas, waterfront development, fishing and ferry terminals.

You will learn on the job within a supportive team.

The company is a Fortune 500 infrastructure consultancy with over 50,000 staff. Its professional services revenue was $16.1 billion in fiscal year 2025.

  • Use design software including ROBOT, GRLWEAP, WALLAP, TEDDS and PLAXIS 3D, among others.
  • Develop concept, preliminary and detailed designs for new builds and refurbishments, including quay walls, jetties, revetments, breakwaters, dolphins and linkspans.
  • Assess stability, bearing capacity and durability of marine structures under wave, current and corrosion effects.
  • Design and specify fendering, mooring arrangements and scour protection.
  • Prepare and review technical reports, drawings, specifications and tender documents.
  • Carry out site inspections and structural condition surveys, and write the inspection reports.
  • Liaise with clients, contractors, port authorities and regulatory bodies.
  • Work with geotechnical, hydraulic, environmental and coastal process engineers in multidisciplinary teams.
  • Learn and apply health and safety, environmental and CDM regulations.
  • Support construction, review contractor submissions and answer site queries.
  • Share knowledge and help improve the team's practices.

Requirements

  • Hold a BEng (Hons) in civil or structural engineering with a 2:1 or above, or equivalent, or a comparable maritime engineering qualification.
  • Be familiar with relevant British Standards and Eurocodes.
  • Communicate well in writing and verbally, including with multidisciplinary teams and clients.
  • Have the right to work in the UK and be able to obtain SC clearance without caveats. UK National Only.
  • An MEng (Hons) in civil or structural engineering would be an advantage.
  • Ideally, a final year project in port, marine or coastal engineering, which would be advantageous.
  • Include a covering letter, predicted and/or obtained grades, the dates you can work from and to, and the locations you would consider.
