  • Remote
  • 6+ years

Salary

$118,400 - 219,800/ year

Description

You will lead front-end engineering direction for the company's content platform as it modernises and scales products used by billions of people daily. You will set architecture, help the team through hard problems, and build a shift-left quality culture with Quality Engineering. This is a senior leadership role with real influence over how a major news organisation builds for its professional audience.

The company has over 2,700 journalists in nearly 200 locations, delivering live text, images and video in more than 20 languages. You will sit within the front-end team for the news website and mobile apps, translating between technical and business needs across product, design and engineering, and speaking for front-end engineering to other teams.

The company's parent group pairs trusted content with technology for legal, tax, accounting, compliance, government and media professionals. Its news arm is a leading global provider of trusted journalism.

About 26,000 employees work across more than 70 countries, with flexible working arrangements and room to grow professionally.

Responsibilities

  • Decide the architecture of the front-end platform, weighing user experience, performance and complexity, and explain the trade-offs to both technical and non-technical people.
  • Run solution design reviews for new and existing features, and set engineering standards and good practice for the team.
  • Coach senior and junior engineers, and help the team get past complex problems across the front-end codebase.
  • Work with Quality Engineering to bring automated testing forward in the lifecycle, so testability is weighed during design and code review.
  • Add automated quality gates to the CI/CD pipeline so regressions are stopped before release.
  • Find the root cause of production problems in the front-end platform and fix them, and take a turn on the DevOps on-call rotation.
  • Assess and adopt AI-assisted tools for code generation, code review and test generation that raise team speed and code quality.

Requirements

  • Required: more than 10 years building highly scalable, customer-facing front-end applications, including leading engineering teams.
  • Required: TypeScript and modern JavaScript at an advanced level.
  • Required: React at an expert level.
  • Required: HTML5 and CSS3 at an expert level.
  • Required: RESTful APIs at an advanced level.
  • Required: AWS at an intermediate to advanced level.
  • Required: Git version control and CI/CD pipelines.
  • Required: Docker containerisation.
  • Required: automated testing with Jest, React Testing Library and Playwright.
  • Required: performance optimisation and security best practice.
  • Required: mentoring engineers and setting standards the team follows.
  • Required: championing shift-left testing and automated quality gates with Quality Engineering.
  • Required: explaining technical solutions and trade-offs to technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Required: making sound architecture decisions with incomplete information.
  • Required: finding root causes quickly under production pressure and reducing technical debt over time.
  • Preferred: Next.js or other SSR or SSG frameworks.
  • Preferred: GraphQL.
  • Preferred: microfrontends architecture.
  • Preferred: familiarity with the wider stack, including AngularJS and Tailwind on the front end, Java with Spring Boot and TypeScript with AWS Lambda on the back end, MongoDB and Amazon Aurora for data, and AWS including AWS Elemental Services.
  • Preferred: experience with video technologies.
