Description

The company builds robot hardware and the artificial intelligence that runs it, with research and deployment work in the same team.

It designs and manufactures its own robots, trains its own models, works with customers from small family-owned manufacturers to very large brands, and maintains its robot fleet across the United States.

One robot is a semi-humanoid with dexterity close to a human's. Another moves boxes, pallets, and bulk goods. Robots in the fleet operate as a network, and the combined experience of the whole fleet is used to train their AI.

The company was founded at MIT and is based in Watertown, Massachusetts. The team has more than 160 people, including researchers, engineers, technicians, operators, and sellers.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the team that builds the infrastructure AI agents run on, including environments, tooling, observability, and context. Design it for agents first and for the people directing them second.
  • Decide which systems the central team owns and which belong to each product team. When teams need different things from a shared system, make the call and write the decision down so it holds.
  • Be the accountable person when shared systems fail, including production, CI, security, and compliance. Make sure each problem reaches the right people within an hour, and take on the ones that belong to your team.
  • Work alongside the engineers who use your platforms, since they respond to problems as soon as they appear. Stay with them on the problem and fix the root cause, not just the symptom.
  • Hire senior engineers, grow the team only as fast as the work requires, and set how a small team plus a fleet of agents covers a large area.
  • This is a senior role with scope across the whole organization. You will set the direction for the function and stay hands-on, with the mix of building and leading decided by your strengths.

Requirements

  • 10+ years in infrastructure, platform, or systems engineering, with several of those years leading a team or function and owning shared infrastructure that an entire engineering organization relied on.
  • Experience shaping environments, tooling, or workflows so AI agents can do real engineering work, not only working alongside them, and a clear view of what that takes.
  • Experience being accountable for production, including on-call, incident response, and the postmortems that follow, in a setting where downtime had real cost.
  • A record of making other engineers faster, with platform work that teams adopted because it helped them and with people coming to you first when it did not.
  • Comfort with users who also operate their own systems, building so they can fix their own problems in your systems without routing everything through you.
  • Clear written communication, with decisions and standards that people read and follow.
  • Background in robotics, hardware, or another field where the infrastructure includes machines deployed in the field.
  • Past experience as the first platform hire or first security lead at a company in growth mode.
  • Experience building a small, senior team rather than a large one.

Conditions

The role is based at the headquarters in Watertown, Massachusetts.

The team works across a fleet of robots deployed throughout the United States.

Qualified applicants from every background are considered, as the company is an equal opportunity employer.

Benefits

  • Health insurance fully covered by the employer, with no premium to pay.
  • A managed 401(k) retirement plan.
  • Full-time salaried employees get unlimited PTO and all federal holidays off.
  • Hourly employees get 16+ days of accrued paid time off and 1.5x pay on federal holidays.
  • Meals in the office and team social events held throughout the year.
  • The company plans to expand its benefits as it grows, with continued investment in support for employees at work and beyond.
