The company is a global technology company building a better way to move and manage money across borders, including sending money abroad, spending overseas, and making and receiving international payments.
The company is building a new network for the world's money, and its products are designed to be fast, cheap, and easy to use.
Those same features can attract people who want to use financial services for money laundering and other financial crimes. The IMF estimates that up to 5% of world GDP is laundered each year, so the company is building systems to detect and stop this activity without slowing legitimate customers.
The AML Risk team sits within the AML Squad. It builds systems and controls that detect money laundering and terrorist financing risk, using data and knowledge of criminal behaviour to create detection controls and useful alerts.
Criminal methods change quickly, so the team keeps improving its controls as new risks appear. The goal is to catch more real risk, reduce false alerts, and avoid unnecessary friction for legitimate customers.
Responsibilities
Lead a cross-functional team that owns AML risk detection and alert creation, setting its technical direction and driving its roadmap and delivery.
Own the team's technical roadmap so that AML detection systems stay reliable, effective, scalable, and easy to maintain.
Lead the build-out of new detection capabilities that spot emerging patterns of criminal activity.
Act as the technical expert for AML risk detection and alert creation, setting the squad's engineering approach and standards.
Design systems and tooling that make it simpler to create, test, iterate on, and measure the impact of AML controls.
Give hands-on technical guidance through architecture input, code reviews, and sound engineering practice, holding a high bar for code quality, consistency, observability, and operational reliability.
Balance urgent operational needs against long-term architecture work so the platform can evolve without losing stability.
Coach and mentor engineers at every experience level, building a team culture of technical ownership, continuous improvement, and resilience.
Work with product managers, data scientists, analysts, and AML experts to set priorities and turn problem understanding into delivered outcomes.
Help the team weigh trade-offs between detection effectiveness, false alerts, delivery speed, and long-term quality.
Work with other Engineering Leads and Staff Engineers on wider technical direction and cross-squad initiatives.
Represent the team across the company and lead projects from first idea through release and iteration.
Give the team clear direction when priorities are unclear so it can make decisions and stay focused.
Requirements
Strong software engineering background, with experience designing and building complex systems at scale.
Able to work in a complex domain and guide a team through hard technical problems.
Experience with distributed systems, with the ability to explain trade-offs and make clear architecture decisions.
Able to balance short-term delivery against long-term system quality and operational reliability.
Comfortable using data to understand problems, judge outcomes, and guide decisions.
Experience with machine learning and/or large language models in production is preferred but not required.
A strong ownership mindset, looking beyond the code to customer impact, risk outcomes, and business needs.
Able to work independently and take initiatives from concept through to delivery.
Experience working closely with product and stakeholders to define requirements and prioritise high-impact work.
Curious, willing to dig into problem spaces, customer behaviour, and changing criminal tactics.
An empathetic leader with a record of mentoring and coaching engineers at all levels.
Leads by example and raises the bar on engineering quality and maintainability.
Communicates well, explaining technical ideas to both technical and non-technical audiences.
Able to build alignment and momentum in uncertain, fast-changing environments.
Experience in payments, fintech, financial crime, or another complex, high-stakes domain is a plus.
Experience working with global and distributed teams is a plus.
Experience building and scaling systems that support multiple products and regions is a plus.
A solid grounding in distributed systems and cloud architecture is a plus.
AML or financial crime experience is preferred but not required.
