Description

The Comparison team, part of the Onboarding & Scalable Growth squad, helps customers see the real cost of sending money and why the company is the better option.

The team owns the systems that gather competitor pricing data and make it available across the company. That data feeds customer-facing comparison pages, a widget, a calculator and a public API, and also gives Marketing, Regional and Pricing teams competitive intelligence for their plans.

The job centres on building the technology for thousands of intelligent, self-healing scrapers that need little manual upkeep, along with dependable data pipelines and APIs other teams rely on. Accuracy and trust come first.

The team is small and growing, with full-stack and backend engineers working alongside Product, Analytics, Design and Comparison Operations. The stack runs from collection pipelines and backend services to the React/Next.js front ends customers use. You should be at ease on both sides and enjoy data-heavy products.

Responsibilities

  • Lead, coach and mentor engineers, looking after their wellbeing, growth and output as the team expands.
  • Shape the roadmap and technical direction with the Product Manager across three goals: reach (collecting prices in new markets and products), convert (improving comparison pages, widget and calculator) and retain (bringing comparison into the logged-in experience).
  • Take responsibility for the reliability, accuracy and scale of the competitor data platform and the public Comparison API, from collection and validation through to delivery.
  • Set the technical strategy for the intelligent scraping platform and deliver it, building the core technology that lets teams launch thousands of self-healing scrapers with less maintenance and higher accuracy.
  • Drive the use of AI in the data pipeline, such as LLM-based scrapers, automated quality checks and AI-assisted scraper repairs, adopting it safely, measurably and at scale.
  • Review technical designs and help the team decide using experiments and the North Star metric, Comparison-sourced new customers, to choose what to build next.
  • Work with Marketing, Compliance, SEO, Regional and Pricing teams to set operating models, request triage and governance, so comparison data can be trusted wherever price proof matters, balancing customer and internal needs with clear trade-offs.
  • Keep track of the wider Scalable Growth area and the engineering function as a whole, including how other teams can use the data and tooling.
  • Stay close enough to the systems to get hands-on when needed, and take part in the on-call rotation for critical services.

Requirements

  • A record of leading and developing high-performing teams, and of setting up ways of working that speed up delivery while improving reliability and quality.
  • A clear product mindset and a real interest in UX. You put customers first and use data to fix their pain points.
  • Strong communication skills, with the ability to explain complex technical ideas to non-technical people.
  • Experience designing and running scalable, resilient systems that process large volumes of data and traffic, with attention to observability and data quality. You can show how you cut manual operational work while keeping systems reliable and correct.
  • The skill to split complex projects into small milestones that deliver customer value, especially when entering a new product area or market.
  • Knowledge of Java, Spring Boot, event-driven microservices (for example Kafka) and relational databases.
  • Experience with, or a strong interest in, using LLMs in production for data extraction, evaluation, observability and guarding against hallucination.
  • Hands-on experience building and running systems that collect and validate data from changing or unreliable external sources, such as web scraping or third-party integrations.
  • Experience running A/B tests and working closely with analysts is a plus.
  • You do not need every skill listed. If you have some and want to learn the rest, the company wants to hear from you.

Starting salary is £105,000 to £135,000, plus RSUs.
