Description

The company is an engineering firm that helps clients turn new ideas into working products, from space exploration and life-saving medical devices to autonomous electric vehicles.

It has over 3,000 specialists across North America and works with aerospace, medical device, robotics, automotive, commercial vehicle, EV, and rail companies.

The company is part of the ALTEN Group, which has more than 57,000 engineers in 30 countries and covers product development from consulting through full project outsourcing.

As a senior software engineer, you will work on embedded control software for power electronics such as controllers, PFC-based 3-phase active rectifiers, motor control, DC-DC converters, and AC drives used in harsh and hazardous environments on commercial aerospace products.

This is a leadership role supporting technical teams and projects on W&W system components. You will work with internal and external groups to deliver airworthy designs that meet budget, schedule, and internal goals.

Responsibilities

  • Design and implement advanced control algorithms for power electronics.
  • Write embedded code for 3-phase active rectifier and motor control electronics from documented control software requirements.
  • Take ownership of small and medium software projects, or lead a team on them, or support others who do.
  • Review and approve the work of peers and junior engineers, and guide and train them.
  • Test and debug power electronics controllers, from source code down to assembly level.
  • Improve software performance together with control system engineers.
  • Review control software designs with suppliers, and lead or join software design reviews.
  • Discuss technical issues with vendors, customers, and other departments, and work with suppliers and OEMs on your own.
  • Analyze customer requirements and confirm them through analysis, modeling, prototyping, or the performance of existing products.
  • Write software requirements specifications, hardware/software interface control documents, and software design documents that record analysis, notes, and the guidelines followed.
  • Plan verification to show product compliance, then write design verification test procedures and reports.
  • Run product performance tests and analysis, and produce test reports.
  • Define software design independently with technical analysts.
  • Find or build solutions to problems that call for research, resourcefulness, and creativity.
  • Support feasibility, development, validation, verification, and qualification testing at the company's facility and at external test labs.
  • Apply sound problem solving to ongoing projects, and check designs against airworthiness standards, customer requirements, and the company's internal standards.
  • Critically review and present findings and trade studies, and give input to program and project managers.
  • Carry out RTCA/DO-178 process tasks and produce PSAC, SDP, SVP, SCMP, SQAP, SCI, and SAS documents.
  • Weigh trade-offs between requirements, cost, and reliability when choosing a design, and develop subsystem designs independently.
  • Lead or support improvement activities at group or company level, and assess standard work.
  • Understand how engineering, industrialization, and operations work together, and move through the company.
  • Follow and promote company policies and procedures.
  • Process engineering changes for water and waste systems and equipment.
  • Build design tools that help define product designs, capture lessons learned, and improve the rotating equipment development process.

Requirements

  • Hands-on programming in C/C++, VHDL/Verilog, and/or scripting languages such as Perl, Python, or PowerShell.
  • Knowledge of embedded systems architecture and programming.
  • Programming experience in LabVIEW.
  • Experience developing firmware on TMS320F28XX DSP, PIC16XX, MC68XXX, or X86 DSPs/microcontrollers.
  • Understanding of active rectifier, PFC, inverter, and motor control software design.
  • Design experience with CAN, ARIN429, I2C, SPI, and RS232 software modules.
  • Ability to use electrical circuit simulation tools such as PSPICE and system simulation tools such as PSIM, MATLAB, or Simulink.
  • A strong work ethic and commitment to excellence, clear communication, teamwork, openness to others' ideas, and willingness to try new approaches.
