The company is building advanced defense systems and moving quickly, and is assembling an early-stage team to turn new ideas into working capability.
This is a field-based EHS Engineer role in Torrance, CA, reporting to the Site EHS Manager - Torrance, within the Environmental, Health and Safety department.
The role supports manufacturing, R&D and development test work in Torrance with hands-on and technical EHS input.
You will work between the shop floor and engineering discussions, reviewing new equipment, test setups, risk assessments, design and readiness reviews, incident investigations and control design for new processes.
The main focus is technically evaluating new and changing equipment, processes and test activities across manufacturing, composites and materials processing, machining, avionics and development testing.
Responsibilities
Give hands-on and technical EHS support across manufacturing, R&D, development test, maintenance and facilities, spending real time where the work happens.
Find and assess hazards in workplaces, equipment, processes and tests, then work with engineering and operations to set up engineering, administrative and procedural controls.
Lead or support technical risk reviews such as JHAs, PHAs, FMEAs, What-If analyses, equipment and process reviews and readiness checks for new, changed and higher-risk work.
Check EHS requirements and confirm safeguards are in place before new, modified or commissioned equipment, processes and test systems run.
Support technical safety for manufacturing, composites, materials processing, machining, avionics and development testing, including pressure, thermal, vibration, electrical, mechanical and other hardware tests.
Assess safety concerns involving machine guarding, hazardous energy, pressure systems, electrical hazards, ventilation, chemical use, material handling and other equipment or process hazards.
Support industrial hygiene work: identify possible exposures, plan and review exposure assessments and sampling, and put engineering and work-practice controls in place.
Lead or support incident and high-potential near-miss investigations, find technical and systemic causes, and verify that corrective actions work.
Give technical support to core EHS programs such as LOTO, machine safety, electrical safety, respiratory protection, Hazard Communication, PPE, hot work, fall protection, material handling and emergency preparedness.
Walk the floor and operations to confirm controls work, spot emerging risks and push corrective actions through to closure.
Interpret OSHA, Cal-OSHA, fire code, NFPA and other EHS rules and turn them into practical requirements, guidance, JHAs, procedures and controls for site work.
Requirements
A bachelor's degree in engineering, occupational safety, industrial hygiene, EHS or a related technical field.
4+ years of EHS, safety, manufacturing safety, process safety or similar technical experience in manufacturing, aerospace, defense, R&D or another industrial setting.
Experience carrying out technical hazard and risk assessments for equipment, processes or test operations.
Working knowledge of OSHA and Cal-OSHA requirements and common industrial safety programs.
Ability to read manufacturing equipment, engineering drawings, process documents and test setups, and turn hazards into practical controls.
Hands-on experience with programs such as machine safety, LOTO, electrical safety, Hazard Communication, PPE and respiratory protection.
Experience supporting incident investigations and corrective actions.
Strong technical problem-solving, communication and organizational skills, and the ability to work across engineering, manufacturing, test, facilities and EHS teams.
Must work full-time onsite in Torrance, California and be available outside normal business hours when needed.
Must be able to meet U.S. export control requirements (ITAR or EAR).
Preferred: experience in aerospace, defense, advanced manufacturing, composites, R&D or similarly complex technical settings.
Preferred: experience supporting development testing, including pressure, thermal, vibration, mechanical, electrical or hardware qualification testing.
Preferred: experience with structured hazard methods such as PHA, What-If, FMEA, HAZOP or similar.
Preferred: experience with equipment safety reviews, commissioning, Management of Change or safety-in-design.
Preferred: working knowledge of industrial hygiene, exposure assessment, ventilation, chemical safety, noise and non-ionizing radiation.
Preferred: experience evaluating machine guarding, hazardous energy, pressure systems, electrical hazards and other engineering safety controls.
Preferred: familiarity with EHS management systems or frameworks such as ISO 45001 or ISO 14001.
Preferred: OSHA 30, ASP, CSP, CIH or similar training or certification.
Preferred: experience in a startup or fast-growing manufacturing environment.
