The company is hiring a senior leader for the Data Engineering team that supports the Development side of R&D within the Information Research organization.
The role owns the ingestion, curation, integration, quality and reliable delivery of transactional data behind the drug development pipeline, from first-in-human clinical trials through medical affairs.
You will work with Clinical Operations, Portfolio Performance and Business Excellence, Finance, Statistics, Regulatory Affairs, CMC, Drug Supply, Data Management, Pharmacovigilance, Medical Health Impact, Quality and Compliance so that trusted, governed, fit-for-purpose data is available for operations, analytics, reporting, integrations and decisions.
You will lead about 15 company engineers and oversee close to 100 contractors from a strategic partner. The work combines technical depth, delivery discipline and enterprise leadership to scale a modern, reliable development data engineering capability.
The landscape is complex and regulated, with internal source systems and external partners feeding the pipeline. The goal is reusable, well-governed data assets that improve interoperability, quality and lineage, reduce operational friction and speed up data-driven decisions across the drug development lifecycle.
Responsibilities
Own the vision, strategy and multi-year roadmap for Development Data Engineering, aligning ingestion, curation, integration and data quality priorities with Information Research, enterprise architecture, business stakeholders, regulatory expectations and investment plans.
Define how Development Data Engineering operates: intake and prioritization, design standards, delivery governance, data quality controls, release discipline, production support, decision rights and accountability across company engineers, partner contractors, business partners and platform teams.
Lead and grow a high-performing team of about 15 company data engineers, and give day-to-day leadership, accountability and delivery oversight for nearly 100 partner contractors. Build engineering skills, talent depth and partner performance, and foster a culture of quality, ownership and continuous improvement.
Shape portfolio and investment decisions by turning engineering tradeoffs into business value, delivery risk, compliance impact, operational resilience and total cost. Influence priorities across pipeline data platforms, integration capabilities, modernization, partner capacity and quality work.
Provide engineering leadership for major development data initiatives: platform modernization, transactional data ingestion, data products, integration pattern standardization, lineage and metadata foundations, automated data quality, operational monitoring and removal of duplicated capabilities.
Design and govern target-state patterns for development data platforms, transactional pipelines, curated data products, integration services, metadata and semantic layers, master and reference data, data quality, observability, access management and audit-ready delivery in a regulated setting.
Set cross-cutting engineering standards covering schema design, metadata, lineage, master and reference data, interoperability, API and integration patterns, semantic consistency, security, encryption, access control, resiliency, observability, data quality and compliance evidence.
Establish and chair engineering governance forums that keep design consistent, delivery disciplined and production ready, with clear data quality accountability, compliance alignment, controlled exceptions and reuse across initiatives.
Drive data governance, compliance, privacy and risk management with Legal, Security, Privacy and Compliance teams, so architectures support regulated use cases and audits.
Guide enterprise tooling and partner strategy for data engineering. Evaluate strategic vendors, shape sourcing decisions, and oversee complex proofs of concept and due diligence tied to long-term capability.
Present data architecture strategy to executive forums, explaining options, risks, investment tradeoffs and transformation impact to senior leaders in business terms.
Help steward financial planning for a large architecture and transformation portfolio, including annual and multi-year investment plans, cost discipline and value realization.
Success looks like: one clear target-state architecture, standards and decision framework adopted across business units, products and delivery teams; fewer fragmented platforms, duplicated capabilities and architecture exceptions across the R&D landscape; faster data delivery through reusable patterns and simpler governance; demonstrable value from major investments in cost, capacity, risk and delivery predictability; and a mature architecture practice with strong bench strength, documented patterns and visible influence on executive investment choices.
Requirements
Required: a bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering or a related field, plus 12+ years of experience.
Required: a proven record of building and leading high-performing teams with both solid-line and matrixed reporting.
Required: strong experience shaping roadmaps, target-state architectures and major investment decisions for modernization, simplification and scale.
Required: a proven record designing data architectures that include data products, feature stores, monitoring and governance in regulated environments.
Required: the ability to influence senior executives and cross-functional leaders by explaining complex technical choices in terms of business value, risk and financial impact.
Required: experience setting up enterprise governance, architecture review, standards adoption and operating rhythms across diverse teams.
Required: strong financial and strategic judgment, including experience with portfolio prioritization, investment planning, vendor strategy and value realization.
Expected behaviors: balance long-range vision with pragmatic delivery and lasting adoption; lead leaders, build capability, develop senior talent and extend influence through strong leadership teams; be a credible partner to business and technology executives who simplifies complexity and earns trust through clarity; act as a disciplined steward of investment and risk while driving innovation, accountability, resilience and value.
Preferred: an advanced degree (MS or PhD) in Computer Science, Engineering or a related field.
Preferred: prior experience as an enterprise architect or head of architecture in a data- or AI-intensive organization.
Preferred: background in regulated industries, with familiarity with compliance frameworks and audit processes.
Preferred: 10+ years of progressive experience in software engineering, data engineering, enterprise architecture or platform leadership, including significant influence at scale in large, complex organizations.
Preferred: 10+ years of building production-grade data capabilities.
Preferred: deep expertise in cloud architecture, distributed systems, enterprise data platforms, interoperability and modern data ecosystem design.
