Description

The company's space systems team is hiring a Director 2, Systems Engineering Discipline Lead, based in Redondo Beach, CA, reporting to the Vice President of Western Region Engineering.

You would lead a growing Systems Engineering group spread across Redondo Beach, Manhattan Beach, Azusa, Commerce, Goleta, Oxnard and San Diego in California, plus Gilbert, Arizona.

The group covers Communication Systems Engineering, Mission Payload Systems Engineering, Space Vehicle Systems Engineering, Specialty Engineering (including Radiation and Reliability), Mission Systems Engineering, Modeling and Simulation, Cyber Systems Engineering, Requirements and Verification, and Flight Operations.

The role combines strategic leadership, people management and day-to-day operational oversight, with work that keeps the directorate's technical capabilities matched to program needs, long-range sector priorities and corporate goals.

You bring hands-on depth in Systems Engineering, including system architecture, SEIT leadership, integration and test, and verification and validation, along with a record of running large, complex functional organizations.

Relocation assistance may be available. A Top Secret clearance is required before start.

Responsibilities

  • Set technical and people direction for every major discipline in the Systems Engineering group, and oversee each one.
  • Build the long-range plan so the organization matches sector goals, program needs and future technology, and keep building the critical skills and infrastructure the Western group relies on.
  • Improve people, processes and tools across the full lifecycle, from capture and development through qualification, manufacturing, integration, test and flight operations.
  • Own the people, processes and tools behind SE recruiting, employee development and engagement, skills growth, NCTA efforts, staffing, and process and product development.
  • Make sure sound Systems Engineering practice is applied from capture and concept through design, qualification, manufacturing, integration and test on Space Systems programs.
  • Oversee program and project reviews, lead Independent Review Teams for key customer milestones such as SRR, SDR, PDR and CDR, and drive SE process improvements, proposal reviews and sign-off authority for SE scope.
  • Move quickly to find and diagnose program problems across development, hardware and software integration, production and test, so they get resolved decisively.
  • Oversee special assignments such as proposal work, independent technical reviews, program standup reviews, anomaly resolution and technical audits.
  • Lead innovation and advanced research in Systems Engineering disciplines that fit long-range sector priorities and Space Systems roadmaps.
  • Champion risk, issue and opportunity management to keep operations on track and head off technical and execution risks early.
  • Manage and optimize budgets covering direct, indirect, NCTA and capital resources, aiming at organizational goals and sector and corporate priorities.
  • Build a high-performing, inclusive culture of continuous improvement and disciplined execution, with strong communication, collaboration and engagement.

Requirements

  • A bachelor's degree in a STEM field (science, technology, engineering or math).
  • Twelve years of experience in engineering, project management, or functional management.
  • Proven Systems Engineering experience, including system architecture, SEIT leadership, and development programs through system integration and test, and verification and validation.
  • Experience leading large SEIT teams.
  • A record of leading and developing high-performing teams and working across organizations toward shared goals.
  • An active Top Secret and SCI clearance at the time of application, with a recent Single Scope Background Investigation (SSBI).
  • Ability to travel 25%.
  • Preferred: an advanced degree in Engineering or another STEM field.
  • Preferred: fifteen years of experience in engineering, project management, or functional management.
  • Preferred: significant experience leading a large functional or program organization, on the order of 1,000+ personnel, and delivering strategic goals.
  • Preferred: strong oral and written communication, with experience preparing and presenting executive-level briefings and presentations.
  • Preferred: a leader who acts with integrity, keeps conduct ethical, balances results and partner satisfaction, nurtures growth, builds collaborative teams and customer trust, and handles change well.

Conditions

The role is in Redondo Beach, CA, with travel at 25% of the time.

Pay is in the range $266,300.00 - $399,500.00. This is a general guideline, and the offer depends on scope, responsibilities, experience, education, skills and current market conditions.

Depending on the position, employees may be eligible for overtime and shift differential pay.

The application window is estimated at 20 days from the posting date, and may be shortened or extended based on business needs and candidate availability.

Benefits

  • Eligibility for a discretionary annual bonus, which rewards individual contributions and shares company results.
  • Vice President and Director roles may be eligible for Long Term Incentives.
  • Health insurance, life and disability insurance, and a savings plan.
