Description

You will lead teams and departments to deliver results, bringing deep subject matter and industry knowledge to a defined area.

You set standards that others in the area will follow, and you need a clear view of how your area fits into the sub-function and supports the wider function's goals.

Basic commercial awareness is needed, along with strong communication and diplomacy to guide and persuade colleagues in other areas and occasional external customers.

You are accountable for the volume, quality, timeliness, and delivery of your area's results, and may also own planning, budgeting, and policy within your field. You take part in short-term planning and resourcing.

You hold full management responsibility for a team, covering people, budget, and planning. This includes performance reviews, pay decisions, hiring, discipline, and dismissals, and may include approving budgets.

Responsibilities

  • Coach and give feedback to direct reports to build their skills and support their career growth.
  • Set performance standards, assess the team's resourcing needs, and balance goals across the team against department objectives and staff development.
  • Explain the strategic importance of the vision inside and outside the team, and set clear expectations for leadership behavior, modeling the company's leadership principles.
  • Design, build, and deploy software components, and solve difficult problems, working both on your own and with the team.
  • Deliver consistently high-quality work that is secure, testable, maintainable, low in defects, and efficient. Keep code reviews quick and useful.
  • Drive operational excellence by raising problems, proposing fixes, and taking on projects that make the team's software easier to maintain. Improve the team's development and testing processes.
  • Build strong working relationships with peers on related software, and resolve disagreements through constructive dialogue.
  • Train new team members on customers, what the software does, how it is built, tested, and operated, and how it fits the wider system.
  • Assess risk in business decisions with attention to the firm's reputation and to protecting the company, its clients, and its assets. Drive compliance with laws, rules, regulations, and policy, model sound ethical judgment, escalate and report control issues openly, and hold people accountable when standards slip.

Requirements

  • Hands-on expertise building web applications with Java, Spring Boot, microservices, Angular or React, and Oracle or PostgreSQL.
  • Expertise in enterprise integration through RESTful APIs and Kafka messaging, plus similar tools.
  • Practical experience applying unit testing, automation, design patterns, and peer code review as standard parts of development.
  • Experience with L1, L2, and L3 support.
  • Solid understanding of development approaches and how to apply each one well.
  • Experience in full stack development using Java, Python, and Angular UI.
  • Bachelor's or university degree required. Master's degree preferred.
  • Recommended: 6-10 years of relevant experience in an Apps Development role, or senior Enterprise Architecture experience as a subject matter expert in one or more areas.
  • Recommended: Expertise across technology, including broader patterns and techniques for the company's internal and external cloud platforms (AWS, PCF, Akamai).
  • Recommended: Advanced knowledge of algorithms, data structures, distributed systems, and networking, used to lead, architect, and drive wider adoption.
  • Recommended: Relevant technology and financial industry skills (AWS PWS), and understanding of all aspects of NGA technology, including new approaches and opportunities.
  • Recommended: Knowledge of automating code quality, code performance, unit testing, and build processing in CI/CD.
