Description

The company was founded in 2014 and operates emergency animal hospitals across the country, open 24/7/365.

Its headquarters team supports the hospitals through technology, recruiting, and marketing.

The company holds 2025 and 2026 Great Place to Work certification.

This role leads design for new hospitals and also supports relocations, expansions, and renovations, from site evaluation to opening.

You will shape spaces for patients, pet owners, staff, and hospital teams, and learn from the people who use each hospital.

Responsibilities

  • Lead design work mainly on new hospitals, while supporting relocations, expansions, and renovations.
  • Oversee schedules, deliverables, decisions, and approvals across several projects at once, spotting risks early so work keeps moving to opening.
  • Assess existing spaces and site limits, then produce test fits and floor plans that fit clinical workflow, customer access, equipment, and design standards.
  • Guide outside architects, engineers, and consultants, and develop floor plans yourself.
  • Work with Real Estate, Construction, Operations, IT, Facilities, and hospital leaders to resolve competing needs and produce coordinated designs.
  • Review architectural and engineering drawings for accuracy, coordination, and agreement with approved plans and standards, and work with architects and permitting contacts to close gaps and comments.
  • On site, work with Construction on field conditions, RFIs, submittals, substitutions, and value engineering, explaining tradeoffs and making sure approved changes reach the right documents and people.
  • Gather feedback from hospital teams and completed projects, then improve layouts, finishes, details, specifications, and review steps.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in architecture, interior design, or a related field, or equivalent relevant experience.
  • 5+ years in architectural design or design project management, including several concurrent projects.
  • Background delivering commercial interiors or tenant improvement work from space planning through construction.
  • Strong space planning, turning operational needs into layouts that can be built.
  • Experience coordinating architects, engineers, vendors, and internal teams.
  • Ability to read and critically review architectural, structural, and MEP drawings.
  • Working knowledge of building codes, accessibility rules, and permitting, with the ability to flag issues and coordinate with the architect of record.
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD and Bluebeam.
  • Organization, attention to detail, and follow-through, with the ability to handle shifting priorities and keep decisions moving.
  • Clear written, verbal, and visual communication, including explaining design recommendations to non-designers.
  • Empathy, taking a people-first approach with colleagues and seeking out other viewpoints.
  • Humility: admitting mistakes, sharing credit, and promoting team wins.
  • Ownership of outcomes and commitment to long-term, meaningful results.
  • Curiosity, asking sharp questions and continually building skills and knowledge.
  • Architectural licensure or NCIDQ certification is welcome but not required.
  • Experience designing veterinary hospitals or other animal care facilities is a huge plus.
  • Retail, restaurant, healthcare, or other repeat-location programs are particularly relevant.
  • Experience with Revit, SketchUp, rendering tools, and project management software is a plus.
