Database Engineer

Description

You will join the P&S Engineering Europe and Eurasia team for the Identity and Biometrics Solutions business line in Romania, where the company builds software for defence, aerospace, cybersecurity, identity and biometric systems.

Your role is to run, watch and maintain the databases behind customer solutions, from design through to live operation and onsite work at customer sites.

You will work with the Biometrics R&D teams in Europe and with the Delivery and Support and Maintenance teams to keep databases available, fast, secure and reliable.

Responsibilities

• Set up, tune and run Oracle, MySQL/MariaDB and SQL Server databases.
• Watch availability, speed, health and capacity of databases.
• Investigate incidents, connection problems and slow performance.
• Tune SQL queries and overall database performance.
• Create and manage users, roles, privileges and access rules.
• Run and check backups and restores.
• Track storage use and growth.
• Apply patches, upgrades and routine maintenance.
• Help set up and support high availability and disaster recovery.
• Take part in database installation, configuration, deployment and troubleshooting for projects and live systems.
• Automate deployments and repetitive tasks, including DevOps tooling.
• Write and update procedures and quick reference sheets for operations and support teams.
• Keep up with new technology and share technical advice.

Requirements

• 5 years of experience in a similar role.
• Advanced skill in database installation, configuration, administration and troubleshooting.
• Advanced skill in database capacity planning and storage management.
• Intermediate skill in Oracle, MySQL/MariaDB, SQL Server and PostgreSQL.
• Basic to intermediate skill in Apache Cassandra, MongoDB, ElasticSearch and Apache Kafka.
• Knowledge of high availability, clustering and replication, plus disaster recovery and backup strategy.
• Understanding of RPO and RTO.
• Working knowledge of SAN, NAS and database storage.
• Medium to advanced understanding of CPU, memory, disk I/O and networking.
• Knowledge of database users, roles, privileges, Transparent Data Encryption, SSL/TLS and CIS benchmarks for hardening.
• Basic shell scripting and database monitoring tools.
• Medium to advanced knowledge of Linux and Windows Server.
• Basic knowledge of web applications, ITIL and Agile.
• Medium knowledge of TCP/IP, DNS, DHCP, firewalls, VLANs and VPNs.
• Ability to install or upgrade applications and write the related documentation.
• Fluent English.
• Docker, VMware or Kubernetes knowledge is a plus.

Conditions

You must be available to travel abroad within the Europe and Eurasia region.

Customer onsite work is part of the role.
