Description

The company builds software for clients around the world.

The Data Platforms team needs a PostgreSQL DBA to own the PostgreSQL platform, mainly Azure Database for PostgreSQL Flexible Server.

The platform runs critical production systems in a highly regulated financial services setting.

The role covers administration, tuning, security, availability and lifecycle management of enterprise PostgreSQL, and supports business applications, cloud projects and development teams.

Responsibilities

  • Run and support PostgreSQL environments, mostly Azure Database for PostgreSQL Flexible Server.
  • Keep production PostgreSQL systems highly available, resilient, fast and secure.
  • Handle backups, point-in-time restores, patching, upgrades, performance tuning, capacity planning and routine maintenance.
  • Configure and tune PostgreSQL features such as MVCC, VACUUM and autovacuum, WAL, replication, indexing, statistics, roles, privileges and extensions.
  • Design and support Azure PostgreSQL high availability, read replicas, private networking, and backup and disaster recovery.
  • Maintain PostgreSQL security: authentication, TLS, least-privilege access, auditing, and Microsoft Entra ID integration where suitable.
  • Investigate slow queries, locks, long-running transactions, connection use, replication lag, storage and overall database health.
  • Manage connections and pooling, for example with PgBouncer.
  • Take part in cloud transformation and migrations of workloads to PostgreSQL.
  • Support database DevOps, infrastructure automation, CI/CD pipelines, Git and Azure DevOps.
  • Take part in incident, problem and change management.
  • Write and maintain operational documentation, standards and runbooks, and help onboard projects.
  • Lead PostgreSQL technically, mentoring and sharing knowledge with other database professionals.

Requirements

  • 5+ years administering PostgreSQL, including mission-critical production systems.
  • Strong skills in PostgreSQL administration, performance tuning and troubleshooting.
  • Working knowledge of PostgreSQL internals: MVCC, VACUUM/autovacuum, WAL, query planning, statistics, indexing, locking and transaction management.
  • A track record designing and operating highly available, resilient PostgreSQL environments.
  • Experience with backup, point-in-time recovery, replication, disaster recovery, patching and major-version upgrades.
  • Experience with Azure Database for PostgreSQL Flexible Server or an equivalent enterprise managed PostgreSQL service.
  • Understanding of Azure networking and security for managed databases: private connectivity, DNS, identity and access control.
  • Experience managing PostgreSQL roles, privileges, authentication, extensions and security configuration.
  • Strong SQL skills and the ability to diagnose and optimise complex queries.
  • Linux administration and shell scripting skills.
  • Experience with automation and Infrastructure as Code in cloud environments.
  • Strong analytical, troubleshooting and communication skills.
  • Experience working within formal incident and change management frameworks.
  • Additional skill: deep experience with Azure Database for PostgreSQL Flexible Server in enterprise production environments.
  • Additional skill: PostgreSQL migration and assessment tooling, including migrations from Oracle and/or Microsoft SQL Server.
  • Additional skill: Oracle and/or Microsoft SQL Server administration.
  • Additional skill: PgBouncer and application connection-pooling patterns.
  • Additional skill: PostgreSQL observability tooling and Azure Monitor integration.
  • Additional skill: Terraform for automated database provisioning.
  • Additional skill: integrating PostgreSQL with data platforms such as Microsoft Fabric or Snowflake.
  • Additional skill: establishing PostgreSQL engineering standards, operational runbooks and production-readiness controls.
  • Additional skill: financial services or investment management sector experience.
  • Additional skill: Azure DevOps pipeline and Git workflow experience.
