Description

Permanent role as a Data Scientist in the London Market at the company, a specialist insurer.

You will act as a critical thinker and problem solver, finding opportunities and helping shape data-driven decisions across the business.

You will work across many business functions, juggling several priorities while delivering both one-off analysis and predictive or prescriptive models.

Your analysis will help build a data culture at the company. Explaining the business value of your work to stakeholders is a central part of the job.

The team has won awards for working with Google to build the market's first AI-enhanced lead underwriting tool.

You will be part of a wider technical group whose work covers several business functions, so problems are approached from several disciplines.

The role suits someone who enjoys using analytics to influence decisions, wants to keep learning, and can take ideas from concept through to delivery.

Responsibilities

  • Apply established standards, new methods and published research to produce key inputs for business information, and help leaders find new ways to grow the business.
  • Own work across the full data pipeline: understand hard business problems, design solutions, and work with small and large datasets from internal and third-party sources, using advanced machine learning or generative AI.
  • Collaborate with data scientists and with product and business colleagues from other technical disciplines.
  • Work alongside the wider data and analytics group at the company, using a range of analytical techniques to deliver value.

Requirements

  • A STEM degree or closely related subject, or equivalent experience. A further degree is a bonus.
  • Hands-on data science experience applying analytical methods to business problems and drawing useful insights. Experience in finance or insurance is helpful but not needed.
  • Experience with data analysis, experimentation and model building for business questions. Comfortable using generative AI tools, including AI-assisted coding, to speed up research, development and problem solving, while understanding the methods, code and outputs.
  • Able to check, validate and take ownership of AI-assisted work so it is accurate, explainable and fit for purpose, working alone or in a team.
  • Experience using statistics, machine learning, generative AI and data science to spot trends, produce insights and support business decisions.
  • Experience with analytical tools, programming languages and databases, such as Python and SQL.
  • Working knowledge of generative AI methods and tools, including large language models (LLMs), prompt engineering, AI-assisted coding and agentic AI workflows.
  • Keen to learn across data science, machine learning and AI, and to keep up with new technology and good practice.
  • Solid grasp of statistical concepts and how to apply them in practice.
  • Experience working independently and within small cross-functional teams on analytics and data science projects.
  • Strong written, verbal and presentation skills, able to explain technical ideas and findings clearly to technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Willing to learn and apply engineering practices such as version control, testing, code review and reproducible workflows.
  • Exposure to cloud platforms such as Google Cloud Platform (GCP) is helpful but not essential.
  • Some knowledge of the insurance industry is useful but not required.
