Description

The team works on the system requirements, design and performance verification of control and protection functions for LCC and VSC HVDC schemes, as part of the company's work on grid technologies that support the energy transition and the integration of renewables.

The role reports to the Control and Protection System Application Manager and involves engineering disciplines that call for teamwork and inventive problem solving.

Responsibilities

  • Study existing designs for a given project and its functions in MATLAB / Simulink, then move them into PSCAD across the full delivery lifecycle: plant model design and upkeep, verification models in MATLAB, test harnesses for conversion, model guides and PSCAD model evaluation.
  • Support the business in tendering, operations, contracts and after-sales work.
  • Build HVDC system models in PSCAD.
  • Build AC network models in PSCAD and other simulation tools, and validate them.
  • Run dynamic performance and protection coordination studies with offline and online simulation tools.
  • Convert PSS/E AC networks and MATLAB Simulink algorithms into PSCAD models.
  • Review engineering designs to find project risks and technical weaknesses, and propose safe, reliable and compliant solutions.
  • Know the key project plan milestones and their financial impact, and make sure technical risks are understood and handled according to the plan.
  • Suggest improvements to algorithms and strategies for fault recovery or instability during DPS studies.
  • Where needed, develop new control, protection and sequencing strategies, including start-up and shut-down sequences, to meet customer technical specifications.
  • Help the team improve through new tools, methods and process changes, working with the Continuous Improvement leaders.

Requirements

  • An engineering degree or equivalent covering power systems and power electronics, or proven equivalent knowledge and experience in the HVDC business.
  • A sense of urgency and the ability to identify and manage technical risks.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • The ability to understand and convey customer requirements.
  • Understanding of how power systems behave and how AC and HVDC systems interact.
  • Knowledge of HVDC control, protection and sequencing strategy.
  • Working familiarity with PSCAD.
  • The ability to meet deadlines without compromising safety, quality or engineering integrity.
  • Flexible working hours and willingness to travel to support projects worldwide.
  • Desired: ability to define requirements and ensure they follow best practice.
  • Desired: experience in the HVDC industry.
  • Desired: familiarity with power system study tools such as Power Factory, PSS/E, ETAP and EMTDC RV.
  • Desired: experience leading technical discussions with customers and building client relationships.
