Description

The company is a news organization: its journalism is central to everything it does, with reporters working on the ground in nearly 160 countries and output spanning print, audio, and a digital website and app. Its business depends on readers finding the journalism good enough to pay for.

The News Product team is hiring a Staff iOS Engineer to work with the Native squad on native app experiences that stay fast and responsive for millions of daily readers. The role focuses on improving the quality, performance, and long-term maintainability of the News app codebase and setting the technical direction for it. You will work alongside designers, mobile engineers, web engineers, and others on the team.

The stack is flexible: you may use SwiftUI, or hybrid web technologies, depending on what fits the problem best. The engineering organization values transparency, openness, diversity, learning, community, and continuous improvement.

You care about the news and want the app to be a daily destination for readers. You know iOS frameworks and Swift well and keep up with changes in both. You write clean, well-structured code and help others value it too. You think about how design, engineering, and product choices shape the reader's experience.

Responsibilities

  • You will lead the design and build of core architecture, shared frameworks, and infrastructure in Swift, SwiftUI, and UIKit so feature teams can move faster.
  • You will build scalable, maintainable, and reliable solutions with your team.
  • You will make app-wide architecture decisions, plan the long-term technical roadmap, and define engineering standards for iOS.
  • You will lead technical alignment with backend engineers, web teams, and other owners of dependencies.
  • You will advance iOS and Swift practices and take part in the wider iOS developer community within the company.
  • You will run programs that improve the quality, performance, and maintainability of the News app codebase.
  • You will mentor engineers and take part in Communities of Practice.
  • Where it makes sense, you will connect your work with the company's broader Swift platform code.
  • You will uphold the company's commitment to journalistic independence and its mission to seek the truth and help people understand the world.

Requirements

  • You have at least 8 years of software engineering experience, including at least 5 years on large-scale iOS applications.
  • You have set technical direction, guided engineering teams, and led mobile architecture work.
  • You have deep knowledge of iOS runtime behavior, memory management, advanced design patterns, and Swift Concurrency.
  • You have built complex data persistence layers, advanced networking, and scalable test suites.
  • You have done mobile performance work, including improving app launch time, reducing binary size, and profiling memory.
  • You have built client-side observability systems using Datadog or a similar platform.
  • You have led large architectural migrations, such as UI framework changes, breaking up monoliths, or automated refactoring.
  • You have designed frameworks and modules, including internal SDKs.
  • You think about developer experience and can turn complex goals and developer friction into scalable code.

Conditions

This is a hybrid role based at the company's New York City headquarters, with office attendance typically 3 days per week.

The annual base salary range is $162,000 - $195,000 USD.

Candidates must submit their own work and may not use GenAI tools to generate substantive content during the application and interview process. For the engineering technical assessment, the company will specify which GenAI tools, if any, are permitted.

The company is an equal opportunity employer and considers applicants without regard to legally protected characteristics, including citizenship, sex, age, race, religion, disability, and veteran status, and it provides reasonable accommodations as required by law.

Benefits

  • In addition to base salary, the role is eligible for variable pay, including an annual bonus and restricted stock.
  • Benefits include medical, dental, and vision coverage, Flexible Spending Accounts (F.S.A.s), a 401(k) plan with company matching, and an employee stock purchase plan.
  • Paid vacation, paid sick days, and paid parental leave are included.
  • Tuition reimbursement and professional development programs are available.
