Description

Openings are available for undergraduate students in a summer internship focused on engineering high-performance computing (HPC) systems, with hands-on work on real projects.

Applications close to applicants on January 15, 2027. Mentors have until February 5, 2027 to finalize their summer picks.

Available internship windows are May 17 to August 6, 2027; May 24 to August 13, 2027; June 14 to September 3, 2027; and June 21 to September 10, 2027.

The company never makes an offer without a personal interview and never charges a fee to join. Current openings appear on the career page under 'Find Your Job'. If an offer or posting seems fraudulent, do not respond.

Responsibilities

  • Support technical or research projects in computational science, cyber defense, computer science, numerical methods, mathematics and related STEM fields, working alongside scientists, engineers and technical staff.
  • Work on a project in your assigned area under close supervision.
  • Set up and deploy an HPC cluster for a technical project.
  • Join project planning and evaluation discussions.
  • Attend relevant seminars, at least one per week.
  • Present your work through presentations and/or poster sessions.
  • Handle other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Be a continuing undergraduate student in good standing at an accredited college or university, pursuing a degree in Computer Science, Mathematics, Data Science, Machine Learning, Cybersecurity or another related STEM field.
  • If you are starting a graduate degree in Summer 2027, apply for the Computing Scholar Graduate position instead (posting code REF8773S).
  • Have a GPA of 3.0 or higher.
  • Be 18 or older at the start of the internship.
  • Be eligible to access the Laboratory in compliance with Section 3112 of the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA).
  • Be able to apply basic computational science and/or mathematical principles to technical problems.
  • Show resilience and problem-solving skills to reach goals despite setbacks, and adapt in difficult situations.
  • Communicate clearly and present ideas effectively.
  • Work well in a team.
  • Have experience with personal computers and be familiar with Word, Excel and PowerPoint.

Conditions

Pay is $23.26 to $31.62 per hour at the 705.1 level, or $26.22 to $33.38 per hour at the 714 level.

The role uses a step structure, and your step is set by your most recent completed academic year.

Depending on your assignment, the schedule may be hybrid, mixing in-person and remote work, and you may be able to work from home one or more days a week.

Under the 2025 NDAA Section 3112, citizens of China, Russia, Iran and North Korea generally cannot access specific non-public areas of national security or nuclear weapons facilities unless they hold dual US citizenship or legal permanent residence. These restrictions apply to this role, so you must be eligible to access the Laboratory under Section 3112.

The posting includes a security clearance heading, but gives no further details beyond the NDAA access rule.

Selected external applicants must pass a post-offer, pre-employment drug test, which includes marijuana, because federal law applies to the company as a federal contractor.

Mobile device rules apply in Limited Areas under Department of Energy requirements. Depending on your duties, you may need to work in a Limited Area where personal and laboratory mobile devices are not allowed, including phones, tablets, fitness devices, wireless headphones and other Bluetooth or wireless devices.

If you use a medical device that pairs with a mobile device, you must still follow the mobile device rules in each Limited Area section. Sensitive Compartmented Information Facilities need separate approval. Hearing aids without wireless capability, or with wireless turned off, are allowed in Limited Areas, Secure Space and Transit/Buffer Space within buildings.

All information is kept confidential in line with EEO guidelines.
