Description

The role suits someone early in their career who writes Python well and wants to build, automate and maintain geospatial data workflows, analysis tools and applications.

You would work alongside GIS specialists, software engineers, scientists and stakeholders to produce dependable geospatial data products and services.

Responsibilities

  • Help write, document and upkeep Python scripts, packages and tools that take in, reshape, check, analyze and publish geospatial data.
  • Build automation for repeating GIS processes using Python and suitable geospatial libraries.
  • Assist with GIS applications, web services, data products and visualizations, taking direction from senior technical staff.
  • Run spatial analysis and quality checks on vector, raster and tabular geospatial data.
  • Help connect GIS data and services to databases, web apps and enterprise systems.
  • Use version control and standard software practices so solutions stay maintainable and reproducible.
  • Check geospatial data, Python code, automated workflows and GIS outputs for errors, then log and fix what you find.
  • Help create validation checks, test cases and clear QA/QC documentation.
  • Explain technical methods, progress, results and suggestions through written documents, presentations and team discussions.
  • Take on other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Be able to obtain and keep a U.S. DOE Q-level security clearance, which requires U.S. citizenship.
  • Hold a bachelor's degree in GIS, computer science, engineering, environmental science or a related field, or have an equivalent mix of education and relevant experience.
  • Have a working grasp of developing and testing software in Python, writing code that is clear, maintainable and well documented.
  • Have some experience using Python for geospatial processing, analysis or automation with tools such as ArcPy, GeoPandas, GDAL/OGR, Rasterio, Shapely, xarray or similar libraries.
  • Be familiar with spatial formats such as Shapefile, GeoJSON and geodatabases.
  • Understand core GIS concepts, coordinate reference systems, projections and spatial analysis.
  • Have some familiarity with ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS Enterprise or ArcGIS Online.
  • Know SQL and spatial databases such as PostGIS to some degree.
  • Have some familiarity with Git or another version control system.
  • Pay close attention to detail and be able to run thorough QA/QC on data, code, analyses and technical deliverables.
  • Spot data quality problems, investigate their root causes, and clearly report findings and fixes.
  • Communicate technical approaches and results clearly and work well with teams from different disciplines.
  • Communicate well in writing and speech, working in a team and presenting technical information.
  • Have experience building REST APIs, web GIS applications or data pipelines.
  • Have some familiarity with CI/CD, containers, secure deployment practices, packaging Python software, Conda or similar tools.

Conditions

Pay runs from $121,830 to $154,500 per year.

That range is the lowest to highest the company in good faith expects to pay for this role at posting time. Pay will never fall below any applicable local minimum wage. Placement within the range depends on factors such as specific skills, education, certifications, experience, seniority, location, performance and business needs.

The role is hybrid.

Appointment is Career Indefinite or At Will. Lab employees and external candidates may both be considered.

The position requires a DOE Q-level clearance. Selection starts a federal background investigation to determine eligibility for access to classified information or matter. All L- or Q-cleared employees are subject to random drug testing. Q-level clearance requires U.S. citizenship.

External candidates selected must pass a post-offer, pre-employment drug test, which includes testing for marijuana because federal law applies as the company is a federal contractor.

Schedules are flexible, depending on project needs.

Depending on duties, you may be required to work in a Limited Area, where personal and laboratory mobile devices are not permitted. This covers cell phones, tablets, fitness devices, wireless headphones and other Bluetooth or wireless devices.

If you use a medical device that pairs with a mobile device, you must still follow the mobile device rules in each Limited Area section. Sensitive Compartmented Information Facilities need separate approval. Hearing aids without wireless, or with wireless disabled, are allowed in Limited Areas, Secure Space and Transit/Buffer Space.
