Description

The Global Business Development & Digital Strategy team sits in New York and London, with headcount split evenly between the two offices.

The team agrees, renews and runs revenue-generating deals that license the company's catalogue to partners worldwide, from streaming services such as Spotify, Amazon, Apple, YouTube and TikTok to emerging music and technology start-ups.

You would work alongside data-minded negotiators and business analysts on the front line of these deals.

This is a 12 month placement for penultimate-year undergraduates, placed at the centre of the music industry's shift to digital.

During the year you will learn how digital distribution deals are structured and how music copyrights are licensed. You will also see how the industry is organised and how agreements with global and multi-territory digital partners are negotiated and signed.

You will practise turning complicated material into clear summaries, identifying the real situation and the options, pulling out action points and writing them up for stakeholders.

You will have direct contact with analysts, dealmakers and senior leaders in London and New York, and see commercial decisions up close.

The role also includes building and maintaining benchmarking tools and supporting ad hoc projects, such as market research, comparing commercial agreements, revenue forecasts and in-depth business analysis, working closely with negotiators and senior business analysts.

You will become a go-to contact for questions in these areas, building working relationships across the business and with outside contacts.

Responsibilities

  • Analyse large datasets, including contracts and research as well as numbers, then pull, visualise and present findings that guide deal negotiations.
  • Maintain internal KPI trackers covering the streaming market, and the licensing status, availability and pricing of hundreds of partners, using first-party partner reporting data.
  • Track and benchmark key commercial terms across the company's commercial partners.
  • Assess partner performance, build revenue models and help prepare business reviews and development work with key partners.
  • Research and monitor the digital market to find and evaluate new revenue opportunities.
  • Take minutes in department meetings and international conference calls, and pull out the action points.
  • Collect information from local operating companies and share what you learn regularly and clearly.

Requirements

  • You must be a penultimate-year undergraduate looking for an industry placement as part of your degree.
  • Prior experience in music, banking, consulting or corporate finance is welcome but not needed. The priority is learning fast, thinking critically and working through unfamiliar, unclear problems with rigour and energy.
  • You are curious, analytical and keen to learn, contribute and make an impact.
  • You are interested in media, entertainment, technology and digital business, and in how innovation opens new opportunities, shifts consumer behaviour and reshapes industries. Passion for music is a plus.
  • You are excited by AI and emerging technologies and keen to apply them to business problems, better decisions and real growth opportunities.
  • You are comfortable with data, numbers and technology. You have strong Excel and PowerPoint skills and an interest in visualisation tools such as Sigma, Power BI, Tableau or Alteryx. You have some exposure to quantitative analysis, financial modelling or data-driven problem solving. SQL skills are a plus.
  • You take ownership of your work, care about detail and aim for high-quality output.
  • You are organised and reliable, can juggle several priorities and meet deadlines, and work both alone and in a team.
  • You enjoy finding information, making sense of complex issues and turning analysis into clear, practical recommendations.
  • You value collaboration, act with integrity, and actively ask for, take in and act on feedback.
  • Preferred but not required degree courses: BSc in Business Analytics, Data Science, Economics, International Business, Finance and Management.

Conditions

You will be in the office Monday to Thursday and can work from home on Fridays.

The annual salary is £28,480, in line with the London Living Wage.

Applications open 16 October at 10:00 and close 13 November at 10:00.

Shortlisted candidates complete a task between 1 February and 7 February.

Candidates who pass the task are invited to an in-person interview in mid February, with details sent beforehand.

Offers for this role are issued in March.

Successful applicants start in late August or early September.

The company is an equal opportunity employer and selects people based on merit, qualifications, competence and talent, regardless of sex, race, religion, origin, age, sexual orientation, marital status, medical condition or disability.

Candidates who need reasonable adjustments at any stage can ask the recruitment team for support.

Benefits

  • Investment in your growth, including focused workshops and a dedicated mentor.
