Automation Support Engineer

Description

The Automation Support Engineer sits in the R&D Automation Department and helps build and support automated systems and workflows that process samples in R&D and clinical diagnostics labs.

You will work with a team of scientists and engineers to set priorities for supporting a group of liquid handlers and other automated systems.

There may also be projects to design, build, roll out and maintain solutions that improve equipment performance and make lab processes more efficient.

The company does cell-free DNA (cfDNA) testing for oncology, women's health and organ health.

Responsibilities

• Troubleshoot liquid handling robots and carry out their qualification procedures.
• Learn the hardware and software of several laboratory liquid handler types, including Tecan Fluent, Hamilton STAR, Vantage and Verso, and Beckman I7, among others.
• Build working relationships with end users and coordinate with teams across the company.
• Write equipment qualification documents and operating procedures so the equipment can be set up successfully in the labs.
• Write user requirements, testing procedures, standard operating procedures and related documents.
• Lead functional and validation testing (IQ/OQ/PQ) of automated lab equipment.
• Train users and provide troubleshooting and ongoing support.
• Travel between Austin sites, about 1 mile apart, to support several labs.

Requirements

• A BS in biomedical engineering or a closely related scientific field, or equivalent experience. An MS is preferred.
• At least 2 years of laboratory automation engineering experience.
• Proven technical skill in automation and systems development and integration for life science, with a focus on robotics and liquid handling.
• Experience with computer programming or a basic understanding of method writing.
• Exposure to automated storage systems such as Hamilton Verso or SPT Labtech is preferred.
• A flexible schedule that allows later hours when needed.
• Strong project management, organization, and written and verbal communication skills.
• Flexibility and self-direction to handle several automation projects at once.
• Experience in biotech, pharma, lab automation vendors or clinical labs is highly desirable.

Conditions

Based in Austin, TX. The base pay range is $83,200 - $104,000 USD. Actual pay depends on factors such as skill set, years and depth of experience, certifications and the specific office location, and may differ in other locations due to labor costs.
