Associate Data Scientist

Description

The company is building one app to manage a person's cars, homes and other physical assets, covering buying, insurance, maintenance, repairs and selling.

It began with car insurance in 2019, became one of the top three U.S. brokers, then added driving insights, diagnostics and a repair marketplace.

It has more than 5M customers, has raised over $240M, grew revenue 70X and became profitable in early 2024. It is now expanding into home, motorcycle and RV, with a stated goal of 50M customers and a $10B business within 4 years.

The Data Science & Analytics team has 14 members and is hiring 2-3 more to work on growth marketing, product development, AI and automation, and strategic partnerships.

You will sit on the central team but be embedded in one core business area, where you own its analytics from start to finish.

Responsibilities

• Work out the business question and the decision behind each analysis before starting, and challenge the question when it is flawed.
• Define metrics, build reports, run analyses, design experiments and find data insights that move your area's key metrics.
• Take recommendations to counterparts in product, growth, finance or operations, explain what is happening and why, and propose next steps.
• Own execution as well as analysis, carrying work through to its result.
• Work without slides; the focus is on work that changes the company's direction.

Requirements

• Break unclear problems into testable hypotheses before working with data, and be comfortable with SQL or Python.
• Explain complex findings clearly to skeptical stakeholders and win them over quickly, leading with the main point.
• Take ownership of problems, including broken things outside your own area.
• 1+ years at a consulting firm, investment bank or high-growth technology company.
• Strong analytical skills, with the ability to pull, structure and interpret data on your own.
• A record of owning ambiguous problems and delivering results.
• Persuasive communication that influences decisions at leadership level.
• Tools used: SQL (ClickHouse), Metabase, Python, JupyterHub and GitHub.

Conditions

Job levels may vary across postings; the company is flexible on title and level and prioritizes finding the right person.

Full-time salaried hires must live in AZ, CA, CO, FL, GA, IL, MA, NC, NJ, NV, NY, OR, TN, TX, UT, VA or Ontario, Canada. Full-time hourly hires must live in AZ, FL, GA, NV, NY, NC, TN, TX, UT or VA. Applicants living elsewhere cannot be considered at this time.

Remote work is supported for most roles. Offices are in Palo Alto, New York City, Chicago and Toronto for those who prefer in-person or hybrid work.

Starting pay will fall within the posted range, based on factors such as skills, experience, location and market conditions. Ranges may change. Equity grants may be offered in addition to base salary.
