Description

The company is hiring a transportation design engineer (CE III) for its transportation team in Middleton, Wisconsin.

The work improves mobility and safety for communities in Wisconsin and the Midwest. You will support roadway, highway, interchange and multimodal projects from early engineering through final design and construction.

You will own key design elements, propose workable solutions, and use 3D roadway modeling to produce designs that can be built and that satisfy clients, agencies and project goals. You will work directly with project managers and technical leads and help develop newer engineers.

The company is a Fortune 500 infrastructure firm with over 50,000 planners, designers, engineers and other professionals. It reported $16.1 billion in revenue for fiscal year 2025 and works across water, environment, energy, transportation and buildings. Training and development programs are available for technical and leadership growth.

Responsibilities

  • Design roadways for highways, interchanges, urban streets, arterial corridors and multimodal transportation projects.
  • Build and update 3D roadway models in AutoCAD Civil 3D so the designs are coordinated and buildable.
  • Handle roadway geometry, engineering calculations, grading and drainage coordination on moderately complex assignments.
  • Produce roadway plans, specifications, engineering reports, technical memos, quantity calculations and construction documents.
  • Review engineering data, identify design limits, compare options, and build workable answers that weigh safety, performance, buildability and cost.
  • Work with traffic, drainage, structures, environmental, survey and construction staff to deliver integrated designs.
  • Apply design criteria, agency standards, quality procedures and sound engineering practice at every stage.
  • Liaise with WisDOT, county highway departments, municipalities and other public agencies to keep projects moving.
  • Manage your assigned design tasks, track progress against budgets and schedules, and deliver accurate, high-quality work with limited supervision.
  • Guide entry-level engineers and technical staff within a team that shares knowledge and builds skills.

Requirements

  • Minimum: a civil engineering bachelor's degree or a related discipline, plus 4+ years of relevant transportation engineering experience. Equivalent experience and/or education may be accepted.
  • Preferred: an engineering degree in civil engineering or a closely related discipline.
  • Preferred: 8+ years in transportation engineering and roadway design, covering highways, interchanges, arterial roadways and municipal transportation infrastructure.
  • Preferred: a Wisconsin Professional Engineer (PE) license, or the ability to obtain Wisconsin licensure within six months of hire.
  • Preferred: experience on transportation projects for WisDOT, county highway departments, municipalities or other public-sector transportation agencies, with knowledge of design criteria and project development processes.
  • Preferred: proficiency in AutoCAD Civil 3D, including 3D roadway and corridor modeling, surface development, grading and transportation design plans.
  • Preferred: experience preparing roadway plan sets, engineering calculations, specifications, cost estimates, technical reports and construction documents.
  • Preferred: ability to coordinate multidisciplinary work, solve technical problems, communicate with clients and project teams, and deliver within budgets and schedules.
  • Preferred: experience mentoring junior engineers, supporting quality reviews, and working on projects from preliminary engineering through final design and construction support.
