Principle Software Engineer – Systems software

Description

The company builds systems where software, hardware and firmware have to work together, and this role owns the technical direction of projects that shape customer satisfaction.

You will be a senior technical leader in a matrixed, multi-disciplinary group of software, systems, applications and algorithm engineers. The work spans full software stacks, from hardware and firmware through the OS to desktop and web applications, and calls for analytical and design skill, technical depth, curiosity, integrity and a focus on results.

Responsibilities

• Set the systems software roadmap from overall product needs, including how the software will evolve and when new technologies get introduced.
• Create software solutions that move the product and technology roadmap forward.
• Build common components into the roadmap to raise operational efficiency.
• Solve problems methodically and turn the fixes into standard solutions.
• Improve efficiency in product development, especially in the early phases.
• Work with cross-functional teams on system design changes that improve manufacturability, serviceability and testability.
• Break complex problems down, derive software requirements and propose solutions that can be built.
• Make hardware and software integrate successfully across the system.
• Push adoption of industry best practice for code health, testing and maintainability.
• Apply OOD and design patterns to build modular software.
• Contribute to the automated continuous integration pipeline that builds, tests and releases the software.
• Coach a team of junior architects and own their deliverables.
• Communicate openly, clearly, concisely and professionally.
• Refactor so that legacy and new systems can run side by side.
• Carry out performance analysis, troubleshooting and technical support as needed.
• Take ownership and accountability for results.

Requirements

• Proficiency in.NET, C or C++.
• Hands-on work with WCF and WPF.
• Hands-on experience with.NET, state machines, and distributed and parallel programming.
• 10+ years developing software in C,.NET and C++.
• 10+ years architecting and designing new and legacy systems, covering architecture, design patterns, reliability and scaling.
• Preferred: experience architecting large systems or systems of systems in distributed environments.
• Preferred: experience architecting common components shared across products and programs.
• Preferred: experience with software for complex mechatronic systems.
• Preferred: experience working with product or program management in agile teams.
• Preferred: experience with Python, Redis, SQL and machine learning.
• Preferred: experience writing systems software for semiconductor equipment, IoT devices, medical systems, robotics, motion systems, mechatronics, electron optical systems, calibration, image processing, process automation, wireless, cameras or sensors.

Conditions

Travel 10% per year to support software at customer sites.

Current base annual salary range is $202,000 to $277,750.

Pay depends on role, level, location and market data. Individual pay is set through interviews and factors such as skills, education, experience, certifications, and pay relative to team members.
