Telecom Lead Engineer (m/f/d)

Description

Critical infrastructure depends on networks that stay up. In this role you will help shape the communication backbone for some of the most complex HVDC and AC substation projects in the company's Grid Solutions business.

You will make sure every signal, command and data exchange is reliable, secure and durable.

This is a hands-on engineering role that calls for deep local and wide-area networking skill, plus the ability to coordinate suppliers, customers and internal teams to turn complex designs into working systems.

Responsibilities

• Lead network component integration on large HVDC and AC substation turnkey projects, working with internal teams and external suppliers from design through delivery.
• Take ownership of in-house network design and push supplier delivery forward.
• Run design reviews and interface alignment sessions, test supplier proposals and customer requirements, and resolve open points through structured technical queries.
• Assess redundancy, routing and high-availability options and recommend the ones that meet project performance and reliability targets.
• Mentor less experienced colleagues and keep technical approaches aligned across the project.

Requirements

• Work as a telecom or network engineer with proven hands-on experience in industrial or critical infrastructure settings.
• Bring enough technical depth to build robust designs and to question assumptions that could compromise performance or safety.
• Gain hands-on experience with Cisco ASR 903 and IE9X series, including managing system resources, implementation details, configuration and the automated tools available.
• Configure MPLS L3VPNs in depth, along with LDP and RSVP-TE.
• Apply practical knowledge of active and passive DWDM components for multiplexing and amplification, plus fibre optic cabling, splicing and patching.
• Configure VLANs, sub-interfaces and complex VRF structures for multi-tenant environments at an expert level.
• Show a proven record of configuring and testing high-availability features such as BFD, HSRP/VRRP and MPLS Fast Reroute to achieve sub-second convergence.
• Know BGP well (MP-BGP, route maps, prefix lists, community strings) and OSPF or IS-IS in multi-area service provider networks.
• Preferred: a degree in engineering, computer science, telecommunications or a related field. Total experience and professional achievements carry more weight.
• Preferred: use automation and scripting, such as Python or AI-assisted tooling, to streamline routine network tasks.
• Preferred: hands-on work with Wireshark or similar monitoring and packet capture tools for troubleshooting and diagnostics.
• Preferred: knowledge of industrial networks and substation automation, including PRP, RSTP, NTP, PTP, and IEC 104 and IEC 61850 series standards.
• Preferred: Cisco certifications (CCNA, CCNP, CCDE, CCIE). Demonstrable practical experience is weighted equally.
