Description

The team sits at a UK Centre of Excellence that is also a government strategic facility.

You will be the mechanical software engineer in the Gas Power and Steam Services ITR Engineering group, building products for engineering applications and for mechanical and rotating industrial components.

Fortran experience is preferred, along with strong mathematical problem solving.

You will work on your own initiative and support both your immediate team and other teams across the business.

Responsibilities

  • Work with engineering teams and program managers to pin down business needs, write problem statements and functional specifications, and set success metrics, expected productivity gains and business impact.
  • Turn user requirements into tool plans, technical tasks, validation steps and deployment milestones, keeping each requirement traceable to delivery and closing committed scope on measurable terms.
  • Upgrade design and engineering analysis applications for rotating components so they are easier to use, more automated, more reliable and more accurate, run faster, and fit better into engineering workflows.
  • Manage scope, schedules, risks, communication, leadership reviews and team coordination so projects finish on time, within agreed scope, with key risks and actions closed promptly.
  • Lead development, testing, validation, release, deployment, support, documentation and user training so domestic and global engineering teams adopt the tools and recurring support issues fall.
  • Coordinate with engineering, manufacturing, sourcing, services, global engineering, ITO/OTR and systems engineering to align requirements, interfaces and deployment plans, cutting rework and improving work across functions.

Requirements

  • A bachelor's degree in computer science or mechanical engineering is required; a master's degree or higher is preferred.
  • Proven experience developing, enhancing and supporting physics-based design and engineering analysis tools for industrial or rotating components. Mechanical experience is required.
  • Strong programming in C++, C, Core Java, Python and shell scripting, including building reliable, maintainable, high-performance engineering applications.
  • Hands-on work with aerospace engineering concepts, rotating component design workflows, CAD modelling, engineering automation and physics-based design or analysis tools.
  • Working knowledge of Unix and Solaris, software builds, scripting, debugging, version control and deployment for engineering software.
  • Fortran experience, with a strong aptitude for mathematical problem solving.
  • Deep understanding of data structures, algorithms, computational methods, numerical accuracy, performance tuning and scalable software design.
  • Strong analytical thinking, problem solving, communication, documentation and collaboration skills for working with global and cross-functional teams.

Conditions

Some customers manage critical infrastructure, so background checks and suitability assessments, such as UK Security Clearance (SC), are required as part of hiring.
